We're now doing the bells and whistles stuff on the book, and didn't
give much thought to cover art.
If you are skilled with graphic design and would like to submit cover
art, we'll be happy to accept it.
If we use your design, you'll get a free copy of the book, retain the
full copyright to your design, and
get a link or something else in the book's beginning.
We've attached the stock cover that we'll go with if we don't get
submissions, which is *ok* but
admittedly super generic.

Hah. I'm still normalizing my point of view in writing from working
on the book content. "I've attached"
Maybe the guy who did the ruport-logo can jump in?

The first one is minimalist, the second one is more vibrant and the third one is a mixture of the first two. I didn't have the original artwork for the logo used in the first and third images - it would make it look better.

There is also a link to the PSD (Photoshop CS3 - Mac) file if someone wants to use these as a template or to make changes.

If Daniel is around, that'd be great.
Wow, this stuff is pretty neat. I like the third cover most.
The code is really clever, and it's a neat idea, but I think that if
we have code on the front cover, it should probably be Ruport code.
Nice idea to have the 'complete coverage of', but if the Ruport Book
only covered 1.2.3, we could have gone with a mainstream publisher.
Please change this to 1.4 :)
What do other folks think? I definitely like this cover better than
our stock cover.
-greg
I wonder if it's too close to The Ruby Way/ The Rails Way style covers
that A-W is doing though.

hmm... you make a decent point pate.
That makes 3 a little more original...

Agreed, although, I find the split a bit too abrupt in 3 ... it does seem like
a good path to pursue though.

I updated cover 2 and cover 3 as suggested.
Cover 2 was an idea that came from the logo. If you imagine looking at the top of a ruby on to a blue page that is what I think you will see - it was my wife's idea.
As for the code in cover 2 and cover 3 if you were to run it you would get "Book cover by Wes Hays" - I thought it was a cool idea ;-) It has been changed using code taken from the website.
If anyone else has any ideas let me know and I will make changes. I have also updated the PSD file so if anyone else wants to make updates.

I really like #4, one change I'd make is to make the chart more clear,
it's kind of obscured by the 'ruby filter' at this point. It might also be
a good idea to add a 'covering Ruport 1.4' tag on it somewhere.

I love the code idea. It's funny that you did that, I was thinking of
embedding a pacman ghost on the front page that way, but thought that
even for that example, the code would be too out of place, despite the
cleverness.

I think these are neat. We do need to give Daniel a chance to submit
something if he wishes, and give anyone else a chance to do something
last minute.
The code listed there from the web site is out of date *blushes*. We
should go with charting for sure because it looks snazzy, but give me
a couple days to update the website. It will only take me a moment,
but I'm distracted by family due to the holidays right now.
Mike and I will try to make our decision by Wednesday evening.
Without other submissions, I'd definitely like to go with yours,
they're neat!
-greg
Also, if we end up with your covers, we can put that code sample on
the inside cover, if you wish.
-greg
#6
- Added covering Ruport 1.4 line
- Increased opacity on the chart from 20% to 40%
- Moved chart down
I completely agree and I am not trying take over or anything. Like I said this sounded like fun and has been so far.
I have provided the Photoshop file in case someone wants to take anything I have done so far, tweak it and call it there own. I welcome any competition to make this cover design the best it can be.

If you can explain how the pacman ghost with Ruport came to be I'll see if I can come up with something.

I appreciate the offer but that would not be necessary. It was me just being geeky.

Well you would certainly be credited in the inside cover, and though I
expected that to be in English, I have no problem doing it in Ruby. :)
Still... an unobscured name and link would give you proper
recognition. Totally up to you if we use your stuff.
-greg
It's probably of a time before we tried to respect a two-beer limit
for committing patches to Ruport. :)
On a serious note, I think I saw a pacman example in PDF::Writer,
thought it was funny, and started to get carried away. If you're a
member of the ruport-dev list, you'll see we still use a pacman ghost
logo there, and you'll find it in some of our internal documents and
communications between developers. It's now lost most of whatever
initial meaning it might have had, and is just an unofficial mascot in
a sense.
At one point, there were ASCII images of the ghosts in the API docs,
and also things like our IRC bot 'inky'. The only real remaining
remnant is that the password for the anonymous account on Trac is
blinky.
We are a strange bunch, I suppose. It may be tricky to fit Pacman
ghosts into the cover without destroying all sense of professionalism,
or infringing some copyrights. If we could find a way to do it in a
tasteful way, I think it'd be funny. Still, that's a big if. :)
