Anybody interested?

http://www.infoq.com/news/2011/11/global_day_of_code_retreat

DevCon's event was pruned from 2 days to just one day so I'll be available on that Saturday. More details:

http://coderetreat.com/hosting.html
http://coderetreat.com/facilitation.html

To host a coderetreat, only a few guidelines need to be followed.

  • Coderetreat lasts for a day
  • Event must be free, funded by sponsors
  • A facilitator is found to guide the participants through the day
  • Lunch should be something good, catered; my rule is that if you are willing to come out at 8 in the morning to spend the day coding, you deserve more than just pizza for lunch
Since it's unlikely that we would cover all 4 points in short notice, maybe just a mini-retreat perhaps? Or maybe we could get the other Users Groups to pitch in to get a language/technology cross-pollination thing going on (LOL).

Mini retreat.
For those who want to join, it's going to be in Baguio.
Some will leave Friday midnight and will be in Baguio Dec. 3 morning.

Not much need to rent a place. I wish it wouldn't rain so we could go
around.

It's good you if have Globe Tattoo or something.

Been checking places like AIM's Igorot lodge, also went to Teacher's
camp and CJH devco today. I'd say location is good and price is fair.
For one day, I think the cheapest option (Igorot lodge) is OK and
there's free wifi.

Not well-planned. We'll probably be working on some projects. Discuss
code and maybe anything about Ruby/ Ruby on Rails/ Python?
But surely, we intend to be productive for that day.

Please inform me if anyone other than Bryan, Rad, Buddy and Erol will
join.

Thanks :)

Hi Melanie...

Newbie din ako forever. :D

There is one event here in Baguio next year (no final schedule).
It's for beginners. But have yet to find mentors.
I am just a co-organizer.

Good ideas from Mr. Valdez, President of Agoo Computer College (he'd
be attending):

Students/ newbies can be invited.

1) Ruby/Python coders can be mentors
2) If we have mentors, I would also like to suggest a "postmortem"
after the coding sessions. Participants will talk about 2 things they
did right, 2 things they did wrong and what discipline they think they
need to become a better programmer. This should only last at most, 5
minutes (just like during the startup weekend).

My thoughts:

Similarly, I want to ask about mobile application design and
development challenges so it would be good if there was an experienced
mobile application developer around.
In that case, I can be a participant.

We can list things that challenge us and our own thoughts on how we
could solve those application development challenges. The rest of the
group can provide feedback.

I've yet to find a place if attendees will exceed 10 people.

Thanks for the warm greeting. :)

I would like to invite my students to the event. Also, I have contacts with the comsci department at University of Cordilleras, so a lot might join. ...but:

> I've yet to find a place if attendees will exceed 10 people.

This would be a problem. I won't invite others yet until we find a place. An alternative is that our 1st code retreat will be a trial. We're still gonna treat it as if we're doing the real thing. But its gonna be limited to a few people. We can see what will be needed and we can plan a bigger event at a later date.

I'm also gonna see if I can talk with UC's comsci Dean if she can lend us a room. But this is just an option. A code retreat (as I understand it) is to get away from the stress of coding, and a classroom might be stressful to some.

Hi Bryan, Katz,

Going back to the original Global Day of Code Retreat,

* During the event a simple task (the Conway's Game Of Life) is repeatedly tackled over the course of several sessions, each session concentrating on a specific area of software development and design.
* While simple to understand, the problem provides many excellent areas to explore different development practices and ideas around software design.
* Coderetreats are intentionally language-agnostic, as the concepts and ideas practiced are core to software development.

So it seems code retreats have a specific format. Also, the focus of the retreat is on software development practices instead of specific technologies.

Katz, when do you like to meet to start organizing this event? Available ako sa weekend. We have to get started asap because the event is in two weeks.

Thanks,
George

I like the RailsCamp format more:
http://railscamps.com/

It's less structured, and requires less prep work.

+1 on railscamps. Honestly don't feel like doing Conway's Game of Life. I prefer our usual hackathons where we build something then demo at the end of the event :)

Yes Sunday only.
Lola is so busy.
Will meet up someone who wants to get started with Rails anyway on
Sunday.
So it's a good day. Let's help her out set up Ubuntu on her laptop.
Don't know her. Just met her sis in SG. Help me out, mentor!

Re: format
Less stress. Follow Railscamp format.

Prerequisite for the event: an idea/ a project and an urge to learn.
We will not dictate what people will do. But Mr. Valdez might
disagree :D

I think we really have to identify our weaknesses/ things that
challenge us.

For beginners, if there are any, someone has to give a short
presentation on the "big picture" or how Rails works/ how Django
works.

Re: place for the event.
Aunt gave me a list. Have yet to find time to check those places.

You might want to check out Tulip Apartelle?
http://www.baguioboard.com/tulip-apartelle.php
They have several units ranging from 2000-3000 pesos a day. A 3000
unit can house 6 (or more, if people are willing to sleep on the
floor, or won't sleep at all).

Regarding the format of the event itself: We can do it RailsCamp
style. If you want to do a 'talk', or work on a project, just announce
it (preferably before the event so that people know what to expect).
People who want to listen to you will look for you, you find a table,
gather around your laptop, and that's it. So we don't have to have one
central activity involving everyone. I can do a Corona SDK workshop
and only three people will be interested. Others will be more
interested on a Javascript talk by Jason. Or a PyGame talk from Mr.
Valdez. Or an Ultimate Sex Positions talk from...

What do you think?

Even though Im not coming(my mom's bday on dec 4 :P), I'll suggest a place. We stayed here 3+ years ago(probably 2007 or 2008 i think) and it was great.

They also serve a mean roast beef(IIRC) buffet for 400 I think(maybe more now since times have changed). Dunno if they have wifi though so you guys can check if you want? :P

BTW, I heard Buddy's treating everyone to a nice lunch.

Hi.

We're meeting up tomorrow 5 PM.
But for some reason I'm out (to roam around like a tourist) all day
tomorrow so you can just text/ tweet/ send pm via Facebook/ whichever
is more convenient for you.

F.Y.I, I found out many function rooms on hotels like Microtel are
free if you book x number of rooms/ buy food. Will check tomorrow.

To those interested, this is a simple registration form:

Rad, I actually live near Legarda so I checked rooms of Tulip this
morning. It's overpriced. The room for 4 is actually good for 3. The
room for 6 is also not really for 6 people. False advertising. They're
also charging for additional beds. More expensive than AIM in John
Hay! Ha! Will keep other comments to myself. Wala pang breakfast!

There's no more Atenara House. It's now a Korean school.

But 4 people will no longer worry. Already booked! It's done. No need
to overthink and compare prices. I. think transient houses in Baguio
are often overpriced and not worth the money for short stay.

Katz posted the attendee list earlier on this thread.

I'm planning to take the Victory Liner Friday 1130pm Cubao-Baguio
