Hello all!

I help Marty Haught and Dan Moore organize the Boulder Ruby meetup (https://boulder-ruby.org/). With meetup effectively doubling their subscription price Aug 1 for us, we're looking to switch off after using it forever.

What alternatives have you explored?

==================
Some we've found:
Example from Detroit Ruby here:  https://lu.ma/p53lc1vp

http://onruby.de/ (In Germany (and Spain apparently) the Ruby meetup groups use this?) But currently is timing out, so not sure what's going on there.

====================================

Any thoughts or input would be great! Given that our sponsor dollars are dwindling, we're trying to save as much as possible.

Thanks!
Rylan Bowers for Boulder Ruby

I have a related follow-up question for you all.  How important are the outreach and networking effects of Meetup for your gatherings?

Back when we were still using it we found Twitter to be more reliable, we were able to invest the cost into food for the events.

BostonRB organizer here. At this point roughly none of our new members actually find the group on Meetup, so there's essentially zero network effects. It wasn't always this way.

Meetup is truly worst-in-class software that I regret using for our last few events, and the cherry on top is it's absurdly expensive. Will write up some more cogent thoughts when my blood pressure settles.

I'm investigating a switch to luma, using meetup is demeaning at this point

This is a great conversation to see. I also was a bit surprised by the large jump in Meetup.com subscriptions for not much in return.

I know there's quite a few of organizers that are switching over to using Luma for setting up events and collecting RSVPs. It's free and pretty easy to set up. I also had conversations with their support team and it was a very quick response time and easy to navigate system. You can basically do all you need to do on the Free part of the service. If you are a non-profit, they do also have a 40% discount to their paid service.

Discord is another free-to-use application and has been growing in popularity (at least I believe so). This has functions to set up events and RSVPs and you can also have live chats/video streaming, etc.

I hope this helps...
Cheers,
Ally

Organizer for Toronto Ruby here, we've been using Radius - it's a Rails based app, and has worked well for us so far though not as much hype as Luma.
