to rtl_433
With all the great work everyone in this community is doing I want to update to the latest version of the code.  I know there has been some work done on the decoders and others have run into issues with it.  I am also having some issues.

My setup is a Raspberry PI 3 with 2 NooElec NESDR Smart receivers.  I'm using supervisord to run 2 instances of rtl_433.  I use the following scripts to run them:

2020-01-27 21_56_04-Supervisor Status.png

rtl433_433.sh
#!/bin/bash
rtl_433 -F syslog:192.168.1.245 -F "mqtt://192.168.1.245:1883,retain=0,devices=rtl_433[/model][/id][/channel]" -M newmodel -M time:utc -M level -M stats

rtl433_915.sh
#!/bin/bash
rtl_433 -f 914600000 -F syslog:192.168.1.245 -M newmodel -M time:utc -M level -M stats

The server receiving the data is an Ubuntu server running Splunk and Mosquito.

My first issue is with both the old and new code.  I can't have 2 copies of rtl_433 running on the same computer and writing to MQTT at the same time.  The 2nd instance will fail with the following error:

The other issue is the new version won't decode some of the sensors that it does with the old version.  I have seen other people having this same problem and tried adding -Y classic.  It still did not decode some of the sensors that the old code did.  I wrote a C# application with M2Mqtt that subscribed to all the messages.  I am then storing the data into a PI historian using the AF-SDK.  Below are the topics being decoded with the old version and then the topics being decoded with the new version (with -Y classic).  The new code is missing the Acurite 5n1.

Any ideas for the above 2 issues?

I just setup another Raspberry PI and am connecting to Mosquito with it also.  The connection issue is occurring so it is not an issue with 2 copies of RTL_433 running on the same computer.  Maybe I need to do something in the Mosquitto configuration to allow multiple connections.  I'll have to look into that some more.

I am also seeing data from the Acurite-5n1.

Maybe there is an issue with how I was building the new code on the box.
I renamed rtl_433 to rtl_433_old

git clone https://github.com/merbanan/rtl_433.git

cd rtl_433/

mkdir build

cd build

cmake ../

make

sudo make install

For MQTT each rtl_433 instance needs a distinct driver selection. The MQTT Client-ID is computed from the driver string.
If you use multiple RTL-SDR, perhaps set a serial and select by that (helps not to get the wrong antenna).

The default sample rate has changed also. Try adding -s 250k.

Christian,

What do you mean by "driver selection"?  I am having this issue when running an instance of rtl_433 on two different computers also, not just if it is on the same computer.

I will look into the serial idea.  I did have concerns about which RTL-SDR would be selected for which instance.

Thanks,
Matt

Thanks Benjamin.  I am getting all the sensors again with the default settings on the new version of the code.  One major difference is that the PI3 I normally run off is in my basement (far from ideal but it works for my sensors).  The new PI4 I am testing on now is on the main floor.  Maybe the signal wasn't strong enough to pick up in the basement with the new default settings?

Sorry, "input device selection".
The MQTT Client-ID needs to be unique (in the whole network)! The ID is computed from the input device option (-d), thus you can't use auto-selection (no -d or -d 0) -- that will collide.

[-d :<RTL-SDR USB device serial (can be set with rtl_eeprom -s)>]

E.g. set a serial (rtl_eeprom) and use both
-d :basement
-d :mainflor

Using

    rtl_433 -d :test

should work here.

That did the trick!  Thank you!  Now i need to update my C# code to throw out the multiple values I am getting since I have multiple receivers on the same frequency.

One last thing I've noticed.  My sensor being detected as a Fineoffset-WH5 has the wrong temperature reported.

rtl_433/Fineoffset-WH5/135/time 2020-01-30 18:00:05
rtl_433/Fineoffset-WH5/135/id 135
rtl_433/Fineoffset-WH5/135/temperature_C -39.400002
rtl_433/Fineoffset-WH5/135/humidity 39
rtl_433/Fineoffset-WH5/135/mic CRC
rtl_433/Fineoffset-WH5/135/mod ASK
rtl_433/Fineoffset-WH5/135/freq 433.925536
rtl_433/Fineoffset-WH5/135/rssi -5.509075
rtl_433/Fineoffset-WH5/135/snr 20.102999
rtl_433/Fineoffset-WH5/135/noise -25.612074

The sensor is in a fridge and reading 0.6C and 39% humidity.

It is labelled Model no.: WH2A and came with a cheap Chinese weather station I bought on Amazon.  I will probably have to record some samples for you.

There is a good chance of an overlap between FineOffset WH2A and WH5. Perhaps you can look into and debug (throw in printf's) here https://github.com/merbanan/rtl_433/blob/master/src/devices/fineoffset.c

Try adding running with:

rtl_433 -R 18:no-wh5

Just one tiny detail to the puzzle. Most arguments are positional. So you really need to give the -d option before the -F mqtt option. Otherwise no device argument is known when the output is set up.

Side note: you wrote about a C# collector. If you can run InfluxDB, there is a InfluxDB output included now. That should handle the dups.

I'll look into InfluxDB although I have my C# app storing the topic and last value in a dictionary.  It only sends the value to PI if the value changes now.  PI will also handle that but this is easy enough to do.

It is running but something still seems off.  I'm rarely getting the data from the 5n1 anymore.  I wonder if there is something else going on.

I'm not sure if these messages are an issue or not:

So I know what is going on with the 5n1 now.  For some reason it is flipping between channel A & C.  I think the weather station is starting to malfunction because the screen that came with the weather station also stops updating.  I don't think it is an issue with the decoder.

I'll try to look into the WH2A sensor one of these days.

I also get a lot of other values come through that appear to be false positives.    I attached a sheet with all the values I pickup and their latest value.  Some only come through from time to time.
Some of the big offenders seems to be
Acurite-Rain899 - I've picked up 2 of them both with 0mm rain when we had a good rain storm come through.
I am picking up 12 Interlogix-Security sensors; Maybe one of my neighbors is using them and that is ok.
Oregon-SL109H that has a temperature of 0 that never changes.
Springfield=Soil - I pickup 5 of these with temperatures ranging from -203 C to 12C.  The 12C ones might be right but the -203 one has to be wrong.  There are also a couple that are struck at 0.

I don't think I can help much in determining what the actual values for these sensors should be.  Just wanted to mention there are a number with values that look off.

FWIW, my aging 5n1 started doing the same thing this weekend. People on Wxforum suggested contact cleaner for the A/B/C switch.  I tried flipping the switch back and forth a bunch of times but that didn't seem to stop it.

Note: I don't use Channel in my Acurite IDs because they have fixed IDs. I only noticed it because the display stops updating and then starts again.    My Acurite (via the access) only uses IDs and ignores the channel switch.

I'm getting a bunch of the above three devices as well.  I don't think it is actual neighbor devices. I think it's false positives from either Acurite devices or Ambient 0007's I've got.

That is very interesting.  I don't look at the access that often but I see you are correct.  It has all the historical data.  I'm updating my C# application to translate the MQTT topics into more meaningful names.  I will maybe translate all 3 channels with the same ID to the same output.  I was going to try moving the selector switch a bunch of times and leave it on B.

I mostly use the Ambientweather-F007TH sensors around the house.  They are pretty cheap, reliable and seem to be well implemented by rtl_433.  What makes you think they could be causing some of the false positives?

Currently, I'm using a table of the fields I want to concatenate to make up the device's ID downstream.  I realize I should probably generalize into maybe a factory and a bunch of device specific classes to be cleaner.

Sorry, I wasn't clear.   What I was trying to say, in the place where I have mostly just a bunch of Acurite devices (5n1 and 592 towers) and the Ambient F007TH devices, I sporadically receive the same devices -- Interlogix with varying IDs, Acurite Rain, SL109H that you are seeing.  My theory is, those are false positives generated by Acurite and/or Ambient messages, under some set of conditions.  I think it is unlikely that my neighbors just happen to have a similar set of devices to your neighbors.

Actually I really like the Ambient F007THs. I think they are very good.  I'm planning to max those out to the 8 channel IDs that are supported by those.  I don't like that the Acurite "towers" transmit so often.  I think once a minute that the Ambient uses is about right for a temperature/humidity sensor.

I'd like to find a third alternative to use after I've got 8 of the F007THs.  Something with a reliable non-volatile ID.

I first started using LaCrosse TX7's but over the long term, the volatile ID is not worth dealing with.  They can get flakely and sporadically change IDs.  Perhaps this is due to the battery contacts not making good connections after a few years. The LaCrosse units use a leaf like battery contact instead of a spring that I think may not be that reliable.

HTH,
