India’s first Chief Information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah should
be honoured with prestigious Padma Vibhushan award for his remarkable
job towards ‘Right To Information Act’ to make the Act a dream come
true for his countrymen at the initial teething stage of introduction
of transparency Act in India. Before quitting the post, he has set a
style for others to follow as Chief
Information Commissioners or Information Commissioners. Even despite
having a background of being bureaucrat, his artistically drafted
verdicts reflected quality which annoyed none. Quite often he made his
dismissal-orders even more effective by forwarding verdicts mentioning
facts requiring consideration, to concerned authorities to indirectly
use the Act as being some ‘Right To Accountability Act’!
He prefers duty to status. Seldom may be personalities who may quit a
‘bigger’ post of being at Centre to realise necessity to serve at a
similar ‘smaller’ post at state-level when Wajahat Habibullah realised
that he was needed more in Jammu & Kashmir where RTI Act is now going
to be introduced!
