Danny Carranza, KATARUNGAN

On behalf of KATARUNGAN, I would like to express our warmest appreciation for all your efforts to assert the right to food and nutrition of people across the globe. Our work continues despite the pandemic and the overwhelming odds posed by neoliberal globalization. Hunger Watch II

The Right to Food Campaign, in collaboration with national partners, conducted the second round of surveys - Hunger Watch II - from December 2021 to February 2022 in 14 states, collecting more than 6500 surveys. The objective of the Hunger Watch is to examine the hunger situation among the vulnerable populations after the second pandemic lockdown. The main findings of the Hunger Watch II are as follows:

  • Income shock: 66% of the respondents said that their income decreased as compared to the pre-pandemic period;
  • Poor food intake: Using the Global Food Insecurity Experience Scale (GFIES), it was reported that 79% of the households surveyed reported some form of food insecurity, and an alarmingly high 25% reported severe food insecurity;
  • Poor diet quality: 41% of households responded said that the nutritional quality of their diet had deteriorated compared to pre-pandemic levels;
  • Access to government programmes/schemes: While the majority of households in possession of ration cards received some food grains, 15% reported that they did not receive Mid-Day Meal Scheme (MDMS)/Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) provisions.

Based on the above findings, the Right to Food Campaign demands the Government of India, among others, to universalize the Public Distribution System as well as maternity entitlements, and guarantee hot cooked meals are provided under the MDMS and ICDS schemes.

ACB raises concern about two guideines for seed and biotechnolgy adopted by the African Union

African Center for Biodiversity (ACB) released an alert, expressing its outrage over the intransparent and undemocratic manner in which the guidelines have been endorsed by the African Union (AU) policy organs. Among others, ACB is concerned about the lack of sufficient time for consultation, particularly in the light that the guidelines are linked to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and other efforts seeking to harmonise corporate-centred laws on the continent for the facilitation of risky trade and investment and dangerously situating farmers’ rights within the context of a commercial seed sector agenda.

ACB will monitor what the new guidelines will entail and demands that the AU be held accountable to the African people and ecologies, rather than promoting corporate interests. For additional information, please contact: Maryam Mayet mariam(at)acbio.org.za.

Dialogue with People's Health Movement

FIAN, as the Secretariat of the GNRTFN, held a dialogue with the People's Health Movement (PHM) in February. The main objective of the dialogue was to reconnect and seek synergies for future collaboration between the GNRTFN and PHM. Joint capacity building was identified as one main area for cooperation in the future. Also, a formalization of relationship (GNRTFN becoming an affiliated network of PHM) is in process.PHM invites GNRTFN members to join its Nutrition and Food Sovereignty Thematic Circle. For those interested, please write directly to Claudio Schuftan cschuftan(at)phmovement.org.
