to RtF - Cognitive Language and Learning Discussion Group
I want to thank Jim and Clayton (and Gregg too) for starting us off.
I think this will be a great group to pool ideas and support the work
of each other. I suspect many of us feel a little lonely as we work on
issues relevant to cognitive disability.

I did have a thought I wanted to put out to the group. My work
(WebAIM and NCDAE) is housed at one of the University Centers of
Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD's); each state has
one. Because of this, I have relationships with national advocacy
groups made up mostly of individuals with disabilities. I was
thinking about how the Cog group might move forward with a
participatory action model, and wondered if it would make sense for me
to make invitations to some of these groups (e.g., Council On Consumer
Affairs, Self-Advocates Being Aware)? My worry is that we need to
make sure the work of this group provides relevance for all members.
If we are moving into highly technical areas (e.g., discussions of how
to apply API's or technical standards) this may not be a good fit.
However, I can also say that in participatory action, you get
engagement at the beginning. Soooooooo, what are the opinions of the
group on something like this. Think of my request in a poker
metaphor. I do have some chips, so do I use some of them now for
this, or do I wait?
