An animation flipbook uses a series of static images, which progress gradually in position from one page to the next. These images then create the impression of movement when you flick through the pages in sequence.

Creator theflippest tells an autobiographical story of how they got started in the world of flipbook animations. Using highly impactful illustrations to immerse viewers in their backstory, theflippest manages to capture their journey perfectly, rendering each flip with style, brevity, humour and precision.

This vibrant work by Amy Pirkle (AKA PerkolatorPressFlipbooks) showcases a beautiful illustration of how visually pleasing an origami-based flipbook can be. Its demonstration of how clearly defined shapes are effectively used when creating an object, in this case a fox, combines beautiful illustrations and a great story at the same time.

Creator Roger Wieland gains extra props for the usage of actual blades of grass in this lawnmower animation. As the figure mows the lawn in this full-colour flipbook, which captures each rotation of the mower to perfection, grass bursts from the pages as the animation nears its end. This extra effect shows how additional effects can go a long way to helping a flipbook stand out.

Persistence of vision was key to early animation devices like the Zoetrope. These cylindrical gizmos blew the bowler hats off Victorian audiences by presenting a rapid sequence of images from within a rotating drum.

With the advent of video, flipbook principles then laid the groundwork for traditional cel animation techniques. Animation teams from Steamboat Willie right through to Who Framed Roger Rabbit drew incremental sequences of linear images onto celluloid and projected them in rapid succession. They also used flipbooks to plan drawings and in-betweens.

Today, hand-drawn animation techniques are largely out of favour in the TV and film industries, with computer animation more popular. Nonetheless, a subculture of back-to-basics animation enthusiasts have brought flipbooks out of the archives and back onto social media feeds.

Top tip: You could consider sketching animation key poses. These are the basic spatial positions your character or object will follow. Use these as a reference point to map the movements between them.

You should be able to see your earlier illustration through the page. Use this as a reference point for your next image. This frame should deviate very slightly from the first image, following the motion of your animation.

To make an animated PDF flipbook, the first step is to create individual PDFs for your pages. You can convert images to PDF for free with Adobe Acrobat online. Just drag and drop your JPEG, PNG or other image files directly into the editor to get started.

Flipbooks are a forerunner of traditional animation techniques like cel animation. Cel animators use a similar principle, drawing onto celluloid sheets before projecting and filming. In both techniques, animators draw large numbers of sequential images to create an impression of movement.

I created my book in inDesign and was advised to save it as .epub but I was unable to open it. Also, I wanted to be able to open the final book as a pdf, as I need to send it to clients (they don't have fancy software usually).

There are some flipping books that open with Adobe Flash player and look like interactive books. This is what I'm after Make an eBook (fixed layout EPUB) using Adobe InDesign without writing code Adobe InDesign CC tuto...

As wrote Derek Cross, there are a lot of solutions to create a flipping book. I suggest you have a sneak pik to CircularFLO it works very well with InDesign and could be a first step in the digital publishing world.

I have multiple requests for this, and the fact that we have to look to 3rd party systems for making flipbooks for Adobe PDFs is very frustrating, especially when freelancers like myself have to shovel money into Adobe's bank account every month.

You mentioned Flipbooks are pass in an earlier post. I have a printed catalog that I would like to photograph and then make into a left to right click pdf. Do you have a better idea for how to present my work? If not, how would you recommend I make this pdf?

Thank you, kkwas. Simplebooklet.com is an excellent solution for my project. I was having problems with moire effect on photos from an old publication when the pdf files were uploaded to fliphtml5. The problem does not replicate when uploaded to simplebooklet.com.

The thing that makes me angry about this issue is that Adobe has no qualms taking money from me each month for the privilege of using Acrobat Pro, when in the old days I could just buy a copy of it and not get bled month after month.... but now I'm bleeding cash and still have to find 3rd party solutions for a very common feature request.

There is a very good flipping book service with a fair pricing which I use used now...Its called yupub. www.yupub.com do all my flipbook myself after creating my PDF file but with this service I don't need to spend more than 5 minute to create the flipbook. They don't charge monthly fee which is amazing. It's a life saving...very high quality and feature loaded

I wanted to create a flipbook from a PDF file. Although InDesign has the option to convert it into flipbook but it does it in Flash format. Is there any way to create a flipbook and publish it in HTML file?

I don't have an answer but I wanted to make sure you are aware that, much as some people love flipbooks, many other people hate them very much. Be sure you or your client has evaluated what your customer based wants, needs, and will accept. Consider what you are offering over a simple PDF, especially to people who will use your site or service a lot.

Thanks TSN. This good advice can't be emphasized or repeated enough. Not only is the flipbook thing an irritant and an affront to usability, but IMO, anyone still seeing the novelty as desirable has arrived at this failed party very, very late.

Finnish illustrator Katja Ronkanen won theNapa Flipbook Competition in 2015 with this spicy animation. Katja practices in the fields of graphic design and illustration, and in various forms of artistic expression.

I am a fine artist and illustrator who loves to experiment with traditional media. I also wrote the book the organic painter which is all about having fun and being creative with natural and unusual materials. I have a real passion for drawing and believe is it is the fundamental behind all artwork as it is a direct translation of the world around us whether it be in a figurative or an abstracted sense. I studied illustration at UIniversity and went on to design gold wire embroidery for a range of clients from Chanel to the Sultan of Oman and King of Tonga, my work can be found in films such as valkyrie and the last king of scotland and my designs also translate to the catwalk, creating pieces for Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Asprey and Burberry.

In 2010 I left the world of embroidery to follow my real passion for drawing but I brought along 12 years of experience and influence from the world of embroidery - hence my style is a fusion of the decorative and stylised with the freedom of painting and drawing that I enjoy so much.

I now divide my time between creating work for exhibition, comissioned illustration pieces for clients such as Microsoft, Peroni, Adidas and teaching workshops about how to expand your creative process through experimenting with new materials.

Looking for some good suggestions/advice. I need to create mockups of my online portfolio. The most difficult is several mockups of trifold brochures with CUSTOM dimension sizes (most mockup generators or PS mockups will not customize the size). I also need to mockup other print work of different sizes, presentations, logos, packaging, and websites for both individual pages and case studies for clients. Any ideas would be most appreciated. What is everyone using to create good custom mockups? Does anyone use Flipbooks? Mockup generators? 3D rendering? My brochures and other print work are created in Illustrator. Presentations> Keynote. I have Adobe Create Cloud, Envato Elements (premium), and Freepik (premium). Way back in time, I used Boxshot 4 to mock up my custom trifold brochure. Thank you.
