I personally haven't tried omni or mecanum wheels yet, but recently built a robot using Ninebot miniPRO motors. IMNHO, this is the way to go - the wheels are strong at 12V, have 60 ticks/rev Hall encoders and overall behave very well. Much better and simpler than the regular brushed motors.
