Our Monthly Meetup @ CSULB!

Please join us this Saturday October 11th at 10:00am for our next *in person* Meetup!

Plug 1331 Palo Verde Ave, Long Beach, CA into your GPS and google will take you right to the front door.  :-)

We'll also post a sign at our old-new meeting place for anyone who wanders over there.

Here's what's on the agenda...

9:30 am: The Doors open. Stop by early and say hi! Or log in early to make sure your mic works. We'll be here.

9:45 am: Business meeting

10:00 am:
Hands-On AI Workshop: Coding your own AI Agent Part 2
Welcome to the second of a multi-part series on coding your very own AI Agent!

We'll build upon our previous lesson to take a deep dive into the subject of tool use as the way your agent connects to the real world. After starting with the basics, you'll enable your agent to solve arbitrary math problems without hallucinating the answer! (Alan)

11:00 am: Welcome to the world of Bottango!
Bottango is a free and powerful animatronic animation software tool designed to bring the best of the battle-tested, 3D animation workflow to robotics projects.

It offers an intuitive, 3D control and simulation environment for robots and hardware, enabling users to make motions by creating and editing keyframes and interpolation curves within a fully featured, industry-standard animation toolset. The software supports realtime hardware control and allows users to easily synchronize motion with audio, video, or external timecode sources! (Evan)

12:00 pm: 30 minute grab-n-go Lunch Break

12:30 pm: Announcements / Show-n-Tell / Open Session. It's a great opportunity to ask questions and get advice. Our members will bring in their projects and share what we've been up to. Are you working on something? Bring it in!

For anyone unable to attend in person, here's the Zoom info for this Saturday's meeting.

Street parking is rare, so I usually head to E6.  It's $10 on the weekends.  There are some parking structures on campus North of there.

Hey there!

It's been too long!  I'm looking forward to catching up with all of you in person (or through zoom) tomorrow!

I'll have the notebooks for tomorrow class up tonight, so they'll be available first thing tomorrow for anyone who wants to follow along.

Tools are a Large Language Model's (LLM's) way to interact with the world, whether that's accessing the internet, running calculations, reading sensors, or even controlling robots.
We'll explore tool use in the Langgraph framework in order to add capabilities to our chatbot that we worked on August.

See you tomorrow!

Alright!

The notebooks for tomorrow's talk have been posted here:

I've still been using qwen3:4b and qwen3:1.7b should also suffice.
You can also use the OpenAI api, just bring along your api key and you should be good to go.

The notebooks include Seth's patch to strip out the /thinking sections so gradio works.

See you tomorrow!

Hey Michael,  thanks!   It was great seeing you at the meeting.

There's so much happening in the AI and agent space that it's hard to keep up, and I was really looking forward to Evan's talk on Bottango.  It's a really nice piece of animation software.

These AI tools can even be run on-device with SBCs like the Raspberry Pi 5 and the Rockchip based boards.

Hello everyone, I'm Kyle a student in Professor Partida's class at CSULB. Pleasure meeting those from the meeting and hopefully I can make the next one.

I'm always looking for opportunities and resources to learn for a career; if anyone has any wisdom, advice, tips, books I should read, resources I should use, I would greatly appreciate it.

I particularly enjoyed the show and tell at the end. Maybe one day I can show something off haha

Hey Kyle,

Welcome!  You're definitely in the right place.  While you're out there having some great conversations about what the future of work looks like...

I'd strongly advise becoming comfortable with using AI, whether it be through chatgpt, claude, gemini etc.
If you write code, expand that experience to github copilot or something similar.

Familiarity with AI is rapidly going to become the norm, much like adding "proficient in microsoft office" became the norm in the early 2000s.
