Reporting read/unread state on RSS feed items

Are there any existing standards attempting to provide the ability to report on the read/unread state on RSS feed items? Other than completely custom solutions (Google Reader for example) I haven't run into anything yet. The Slow Feeds post reminded me that I've been meaning to try and find a solution (outside of Google Reader) for this problem for use cases where a river is not appropriate.
