to RSG-India - Internship/Project reviews
Date & duration: January-June 2006 (6 months)

Place : Bioinformatics centre, Dr. Debnath Pal Lab

Fees : none

Process of selection : No specified process, an interview is usually
conducted by Dr. Pal

Experience : Very Good. Facilities in IISc are top notch and you have
a lot of freedom to work. I found my ideas to be welcome, people were
warm and respected even a novice's(like me .. ) views. Rest is like
what Anupama already described (unbeatable research atmosphere ..)...
I also loved the opportunity of hearing top scientists lecture time to
time while I was there on campus in IISc.

No offence meant, but I personally found Dr. Sekar's lab's army like
timings and rules to be intimidating. Yes, I was not a part of his
lab...but I was scared to be.
Dr. Chandra's lab is another great place, her research in systems
biology is making big strides and the lab has a very congenial
atmosphere.

And finally, I would just like to point out one big error many
students are making. Please, please do not send a general email asking
for internships to Profs., nothing puts them off more than
that....esp. since nowadays they are flooded with such emails. Make
the effort to find out and decide whose lab you really want to join,
then Read Up their research interests, curent projects...and write a
specific email, possibly outlining a project idea you could carry out
in their lab OR what contribution you feel you could make to the
ongoing research projects.

regards

Venkatakrishnan

to RSG-India - Internship/Project reviews
Duration: Jun, 08 - Oct, 08 & Jan, 09 - Present
Place: Dr. Nagasuma Chandra lab, Bioinformatics centre, IISc
Fees: none
Process of selection: By personal interview
About the lab: Given below

Dr. Chandra's lab is one of the three labs in the Bioinformatics
Centre at IISc. The ongoing research can be broadly described as
application of approaches in Computational Systems Biology and
Structural Bioinformatics to study diseases. The lab has
collaborations with several groups in academia and industry. For more
information about research, publications and people in the lab, please
visit http://proline.physics.iisc.ernet.in/home/Main_Page

The lab has a very congenial atmosphere for research. The lab members
are encouraged to work in teams of two/three which according to me
increases the productivity and induces a sense of accountability.
Also, at any given time, every member is engaged in more than one
project. Original and innovative ideas are greatly appreciated. All
the support possible is extended to pursue such ideas.

There are limited number of members and hence every one has access to
all the resources of the lab. People in the lab are high spirited and
always available for discussions on research related queries, and at
times on other general topics too :).

Past members of the lab are currently studying/working at reputed
research centers in different parts of the world.

Advice: I would rate Dr. Chandra's lab among the best labs I have
worked in. If you are genuinely interested in the kind of research
that goes on in this lab, keep an eye out for vacancies in the 'Open
Positions' page of the lab wiki.
