to RSG-India - Internship/Project reviews
Hi all,
I did my summer training in Bioinformatics centre, JNU .
Dates and duration : May-June 2005 (that long ago ..when it was still
called BIC and not CCBB ...!!)
Process of Application: At the time, I applied we had to write a page
describing our area of interest, and send it along with our detailed
c.v. to the institute by post.
Fees : None
Experience : Excellent experience. At the time I joined, I was in my
first year of Bioinformatics and very raw in the field. I was in the
lab of Dr. Andrew Lynn and his Phd student, who helped me pick up the
ropes and taught me so much in so little time, that I feel I have
never learnt so fast ever before or after. Everyone in the centre was
down to earth and always willing to help. I am still indebted to them,
for many skills which are an indispensable part of my work life today
as a Phd student.
Recommendation : I would strongly recommend Dr. Lynn's lab to anyone.
I think the other professors are nice too, but I do not know much
about them. I found Dr. Alok Bhattacharya, who was the dean at that
time, to be a strict and not so friendly person. I think he is also
very busy, to be able to give personal attention to summer interns
maybe ...
General comments: I think before joining any lab, one must interact
and try to gather information from present students in the department
and lab. This also helps in getting a helping hand and quick start
when you start your work in the lab. Do not hesitate in asking for
help from people, and remember that the friend/mentor connections made
here go very far in your future.
Hope it helps someone! :)
regards,
V
