Hi all
First and foremost I'm very happy that RSG has come forward with this
wonderful initiative and that Im posting my experiences here for the
benefit of others.
I'm currently doing my Final year in Bioinformatics at SRM
University. Taking Bioinformatics was not a conscious decision but I'm
happy that I landed studying this wonderful course.

I did my internship way back in 2nd
year end - 3rd year beginning ( summer holidays). Doing an internship
was not a compulsion in my case, but I was eager and very enthusiastic
about gaining some experience in this field then.

First of all whether you end up doing an
internship or not, choosing the right place is the most important
thing according to me. What i meant was that an initiative must not be
done out of compulsion but out of personal interest and the urge to do
so.

I wanted to do internship in one of the following :
a. a research institute that dealt with Bioinformatics work ( Bioinfo/
Biotech/IT)
b. Pharma Company
c. Information Technology company that had Bioinformatics Projects

Due to lack of exposure or the knowledge in this thing I dint get
internship in Pharma company or Research Institute. It mostly like, if
you had a friend or relative in these places you could seep in!
But I'm sure its better now and many institutes offer student training
and internships.

I traced an IT company to which I applied and
got an offer for training for three weeks. To be frank I knew the
administrative officer. The company called Point Cross Ltd.( ISO
9001:2000 certified) is in Contonement, Bangalore. Its a product
development company which has designed decision support systems (DSS)
to many clients like SHELL and PHARMQUEST.

When i went there for my training, the company had recently merged
with a Pharma Company called PharmQuest (Pune). Their aim was to
understand the core research happening in that pharma company and
provide them with DSS suite that could aid the researchers to store
vast amount of clinical data and also create Forms that had a suitable
format for the company to propose drugs to be approved by the FDA
( Food and Drug Administration), in USA. They had released a product
called Integrated Drug Development Suite (IDDS)

I had no idea about Data warehousing or Decision Support Systems.
Going there I was exposed and trained in the corporate workings or the
Drug data storage and how the IT provided solutions to the existing
problems in that area.
Some of the products offered by the company then were
> TOXQUEST - a solution for electronic submission and review of Toxicological Data. Some of its inbuilt modules
include TOXVISION, TOXCONNECT, TOXSUB and SEND ( the Standard for
Exchange of Nonclinical Data) Validator.

The major clients of this PharmQuest are
> AstraZeneca
>FDA
>Pfizer
>Lilly
>CDER
>Aventis
>Banner PharmCaps
>Abbott Laboratories

My personal Advise regarding this is :
a. Develop contacts in as many institutes as possible
b. keep in touch with them and see how this will help you later.
c. Try to reach and use opportunities in places that will be useful to
you as every experiences is considered an opportunity to learn new
things.

Trying in IT companies is not a mistake, unless you know that they
will not help you in you future endeavors.

I'm happy I became more aware of the happenings of the processes
outside the Clinical labs in Pharmaceutical companies and how
Bioinformatics play a key role there through this opportunity!

This is just a small experience and I hope that this write up was
useful for all you readers. I'm looking forward to reading many more
such experiences from all of you so that it helps me too in some way.

my best wishes to those who are looking out for internships in places!

best regards
