Forwarding a great new article by Brooks Hanson et al regarding recommendations for author transparency and accountability: www.pnas.org/cgi/doi/10.1073/pnas.1715374115. This overall focus is a little tangential to our current conversation about deceptive publishing, but parts of Brooks’ paper might be an important contribution to our thinking about how to improve quality and accountability in the system. For instance:

Provide Expectations for Corresponding Authors.

As a second step, journals should clearly articulate their expectations for corresponding authors (CAs). Appropriate roles for the CAs are as follows: ensuring that all listed authors have approved the manuscript before submission and that all authors receive the submission and all substantive correspondence with editors, as well as the full reviews, verifying that all data, materials (including reagents), and code, even those developed or provided by other authors, comply with the transparency and reproducibility standards of both the field and journal. This responsibility includes but is not limited to: (i) ensuring that original data/materials/code upon which the submission is based are preserved following best practices in the field so that they are retrievable for reanalysis; (ii) confirming that data/materials/code presentation accurately reflects the original; and (iii) foreseeing and minimizing obstacles to the sharing of data/materials/code described in the work. The CA should be responsible for managing these requirements across the author group and ensuring that the entire author group is fully aware of and in compliance with best practices in the discipline of publication.

Best,

Glenn

Subject: Question on Team Member Criteria

Good afternoon SCITLIST!

First of all, thank you to all of the contributing members on this listserv- I am a newcomer to the world of SciTS and you all have been a great help.

A question for the group:

I am currently working on a project where we will be studying team dynamics for several teams who have recently been awarded pilot projects. We are in initial meetings with PIs and they have identified some of their project collaborators. In some cases, it is hard to determine if a collaborator is true member of the team or simply works as a provider of services (ie: mass spectrometry.)

Are you aware of any criteria (future publication authorship?) for determining who is/is not part of an interdisciplinary team? Our idea was to administer our survey instrument to all involved and allow them to self-select.

Any thoughts/input would be greatly appreciated!

Gratefully,
