Another big ask! What’s wrong with me you cry– all this activity on a
Friday!!

I’m helping to organise a HE in FE conference with The Academy: * e-
asy eassessment event with Professor Phil Race: May 17th :
http://info.rsc-em.ac.uk/events/event_details.asp?eid=137

The workshop I’m organising is entitled “Assessment for reflection!”

Now, I have some ideas for this 1.5 hour workshop, obviously I’d be
silly not to consider Julie Hughes at the top of my list with all of
the fab work she’s doing there in the West Mids( and beyond). But ....
as you know her learners are trainee teachers. And I believe that the
level maturity in trainee teachers is helping the uptake/success of
this reflective/discursive/dialogic – facilitated by overworked HE
lecturers + Pebblepad. These. There’s much effective practice around
covering these professions (trainee teachers, nurses & social workers)
I could easily call upon, but the obvious link here is existing paper
(read useless in the 21stC) based folios + (more) mature learners. Not
that I’m undermining the excellent work being done out there. Believe
me, we are lucky to know some true pioneers pushing the boundaries,
usually against all odds and with minimal (organisational support). –
nuff said. <off soap box now> <preparing to be shot down :O( in
flames >

Anyhoo back to the plot >>

Our target delegates are very very busy FE lecturers delivering HE, so
although good tho’ it is the Jenny Moon approach is too complex. Is
there any other reflective models i.e. The simple Driscoll model:
http://www.supervisionandcoaching.com/images/PDF%201%20Reflective%20Learning%20Cycle%20%28Driscoll%202007%29.pdf
...being used as a scaffolded reflective model for FE students (using
blogs or eportfolios)? Or the nursing reflective approaches :
http://www.wipp.nhs.uk/tools_gpn/toolu4_eg_reflective.php being used
for HE in FE?

I’m also quite keen to investigate whether or not anyone in FE land
has hand the time to use some of the rubrics out there to use digital
storytelling as a means of assessment? And not just the arts, as again
we’ve got the common existing portfolio link going on. Engineering,
construction, humanities, etc – any of those areas using creative
assessment methods in FE?

http://sites.google.com/site/reflection4learning/technology-tools-for-reflection#TOC-Blogs-Reflective-Journal-
http://electronicportfolios.org/digistory/
http://electronicportfolios.org/digistory/ResearchDesign.pdf
I remember watching Bob Rotherham (Leeds Met) doing a slot at ALT-C a
couple of years ago, where he talked about digital stories +
assessment with trainee doctors. Again a good idea, but would it work
in stupidly busy FE land?

So, for the 1.5 hour slot we need a workshop that delegates can learn
about possible approaches of assessing reflection (blogs, wikis,
stories, vodcasts, podcasts, rubrics, etc?) and work up ideas of a
framework/model they can try out in a busy FE college.

Or maybe I’m thinking too big? Should I just go back & look at some
of the PDP case studies on the fabby infokit to see what’s worked
there? http://www.jiscinfonet.ac.uk/infokits/e-portfolios/pdp

Or maybe speak to someone at Coventry Uni who have used PPAD to
summative assess the PDP module over there? And use that as a much
straightforward starting place?

An Idea I had a few years ago, was to use the VLE / electronic marking
tools more effectively. Whereby students submitted 90% completed
drafts of PDP modules. The marking tutor then used Moodle to add
feedback onto the upload assignment. Student then read feedback –
digested & reflected , addressed areas under scrutiny, then re-
submitted. Therefore reflection is implicit in this type of approach?
Mind you I’ve been told that most of FE don’t second mark – so that
idea’s a non starter? I ‘spose this leads me back to Bob Rotherham’s
& his new Soundsgood project on audio feedback methods/reflection?

Above all it’s gotta be simple? Are we talking blogs & back to Julie
Hughes simple & effective dialogic model then?

All ideas welcome for a workshop on this topic.

Regards..
