HideMyAss! (HMA) is one of the best known VPN and web proxy services on the market. It works very well and secures your online privacy and protects you against cyber hackers. But at the same time, it can also slow down your Internet connection and also generate disconnects. Users are complaining online about the fact that HMA VPN has frequent disconnections and other type of connection issues. When this happens, it can leave users unprotected to cyber threats and completely exposed.


HMA VPN only uses one Internet connection to route all the data to the VPN server. Even if your laptop, iPhone or Android device has multiple Internet connections, HMA VPN will only use one of them. When connecting to the VPN server it uses a single socket. This means that your Internet connection will run slower because all the data being sent to and from your device must first be sent to the VPN server for encryption through one channel.


This uses up a lot of your bandwidth. But, not only does it slow down your Internet experience, it also makes the VPN connection vulnerable. One change to your Wi-Fi signal or a fluctuation in your cell signal and you are disconnected from the HMA VPN server. We recently enabled HMA in our environment, but disabled because it forced users to sign in via office 365 while in the office. We currently have a mix of office 2010, 2013, 2016. Later on we will be moving everyone to the office 365 suite. We have on premise exchange 2016. AD is also on prem. We recently went to SharePoint online (365). So we also had to implement ADFS and use Azure AD connect so our users were synced up to Azure.


Is this normal behavior? When a user launches outlook via there client computer in the office. Will it always force them to sign into office 365. Which also forces them to login to our ADFS portal to enter their passwords. What other options if any are available? When we setup HMA we had to setup a New-AuthServer. Is it possible to have multiple AuthServers for onprem and those who also work remotely? I would like to avoid having users login again when opening outlook while in the office. I know it is a very simple thing but it is a change for our users across the board. I am also very new to HMA/ADFS so i am curious what others have done.


If this is normal behavior that is fine. I just have to let upper management know this would now be the norm. If you need other screen shots let me know. But this is what i see below. Then outlook will launch.






Pew Research estimates that 84% of American adults use the internet, a place where privacy and security are in short supply. What do internet users want in terms of security and privacy? What do they do to protect their own privacy and security when they use the internet? Hide My Ass! (HMA) commissioned a nationwide survey to find out. The main results revealed a striking disconnect between what people want and what they do while a deeper look uncovered some intriguing differences between men and women.


This is the first article in a series examining attitudes and actions about online security and privacy among different demographic groups. The second article looked at differences between older and younger millennials and the third did the same for the baby boomers and everyone else.


HMA summarized the results of their survey with an attractive infographic and a more detailed report. The key take-away is simple and straightforward. While most people want more internet security and privacy, they do very little to make use of the tools and techniques that are available to give them what they want. The survey found that 70% of consumers say they restrict their level of social media use in order to avoid exposing personal information. However, only 25% enable strict privacy restrictions on the social media platforms they use. Likewise, 67% say they want additional layers of security while only 9% use email encryption programs, 11% use a VPN and 13% use two-factor authorization.


The survey carried out by Morar involved a representative sample of 2028 internet users in the US gathered during November 2015. The data were gathered using the Crowdology panel. Crowdology is an online research company that pays people to take online surveys. The use of paid survey takers raises concerns about whether the sample in the HMA survey is representative of the population of US internet users. Morar has gone to great lengths to allay these concerns. Over 900 data points that can be used to match samples with populations are gathered about each person in the Crowdology pool of survey takers. The HMA survey was balanced with the US population in terms of gender, age, marital status, geographic location, employment, and income. Morar drew the sample from a pool of 4 million people living in the US.


Another factor to keep in mind is that some of the findings in the following discussion are near the margins of error for the demographic groups being discussed. For these two reasons it would be best to consider what follows in terms of likely trends rather than verified statistical regularities.


The men and women who responded to the HMA survey differ in their use of the internet. Thirty-eight percent of the women, as opposed to 31% of the men, indicated that they usually spend 35 hours or more per week on the internet. The women were also more likely to use social media for personal reasons (45%) than the men (37%).


Women tend to spend more time on the internet and use social media for personal reasons more than men. Women are also warier of what they post online and are less likely to equate their social media presence with personal popularity or success. How are these differences reflected in the ways men and women seek to protect their online privacy and security?


Men (66%) were slightly more likely than women (61%) to report having had security problems such as having an account compromised or hacked, or accidentally installing spyware, malware or a virus. Even so, women felt markedly less confident (52%) than men (33%) that they were protected from a range of security problems such as phishing, pharming, or having their bank, computer, or online accounts hacked. While women felt less secure, they were only marginally more likely (68%) than men (65%) to say they would like access to additional layers of online protection.


An interesting difference between the ways men and women act to protect themselves online emerged in the HMA survey. Women tend to rely more on personal means of protection than men. For example, it was noted earlier that women are more careful than men about the personal information they share online. Women (62%) were also more likely than men (49%) to make use of personalized privacy settings. After they experienced a security problem, women (61%) were more likely than men (51%) to make lasting changes in their online behavior in order to protect themselves from future problems.


It may be that men are more confident than women that they are protected online because they tend to rely more heavily on technical means of protection. It may also be that men are more likely to be clueless when it comes to online security.
