0) RRND/FND 3rd quarter fundraiser

Update, 07/06/10: Thanks to GL, who kicked our quarterly fundraiser
off with a $20 contribution over the weekend!

We're off to a slow start, but I suspect most of you were out and
about this weekend having fun instead of reading email and that kind
of thing. We're shooting for $2,083 in three months ... and the sooner
we reach our goal, the sooner I can stop quacking about it - TLK

1) Gulf spill: Tar balls hit Lake Pontchartrain shores
CNN

"Tar balls believed to be from the undersea gusher in the Gulf of
Mexico have reached the shores of Louisiana's Lake Pontchartrain, a
foundation that monitors the watershed reported Monday. ... State
officials have closed a swath of the southern part of the 630-square-
mile lake to fishing following the discovery, but there was no sign of
impact to wildlife as of Monday, Rheams said. The Coast Guard reported
Sunday that a shift in weather patterns could send more oil toward
sensitive shores in Mississippi and Louisiana, and bad weather over
the past few days has significantly hampered cleanup
efforts." (07/05/10)

2) Somalia: Anti-government protesters march in Mogadishu
CNN

"Anti-government demonstrators, including women dressed in full hijabs
brandishing AK-47 automatic rifles, marched through the streets of
Somalia's violence-torn capital Monday. The marchers shouted slogans
and carried English-language signs accusing the African Union Mission
in Somalia, or AMISOM, a peacekeeping military force backing the
government, of killing people." (07/05/10)

3) Iraq: Six killed, 46 wounded
AntiWar.Com

"At least six Iraqis were killed and 46 more were wounded in attacks
across the country, but rocket and mortar attacks that may have
targeted U.S. Vice President Joe Biden left no casualties in the Green
Zone. Meanwhile, Biden spoke with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani
before wrapping up his trip to Iraq." (07/05/10)

4) Afghanistan: Three occupation troops killed
CNN

"Three members of the NATO-led force in Afghanistan were killed Monday
in improvised explosive device attacks, the force said. Two were
killed in an attack in eastern Afghanistan; a third was killed in the
southern part of the country." (07/05/10)

5) Pakistan: Four suicide bombers attack fort, kill one
Agence France-Presse

"Four suicide attackers armed with car bombs and rockets targeted a
fort in Pakistan, killing a soldier and wounding at least seven in an
area troubled by Taliban, officials said Monday. The squad targeted
the post manned by paramilitary in the northwestern town of Timargarah
in Lower Dir at around 2:15 am (2115 GMT Sunday), local police chief
Qazi Jamil said." (07/05/10)

6) Dutch agency admits mistake in UN climate report
Naples Daily News

"A leading Dutch environmental agency, taking the blame for one of the
glaring errors that undermined the credibility of a seminal U.N.
report on climate change, said Monday it has discovered more small
mistakes and urged the panel to be more careful. But the review by the
Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency claimed that none of the
errors effected the fundamental conclusion by U.N. panel of
scientists: that global warming caused by humans already is happening
and is threatening the lives and well-being of millions of
people." (07/05/10)

7) Survey: 26% flub question on US independence
Washington Post

"A new poll gauging American knowledge on a basic question about the
nation's history -- 'From which country did the United States win its
independence?' -- is either good news or bad news, depending on your
expectations: Twenty-six percent of those surveyed did not know that
the United States achieved its independence from Great Britain,
according to the poll, conducted by the nonprofit Marist Institute for
Public Opinion. Six percent named a different country, including
France, China, Japan, Mexico and Spain. Twenty percent said they
weren't sure. The pollsters broke down the numbers and found gaps in
knowledge according to region: 32 percent of Southerners weren't sure
or named the wrong country; 26 percent of Midwesterners were in the
same category, as were 25 percent of Westerners and 16 percent of
Northeasterners." (07/05/10)

8) TN: Dozens arrested at nuke weapons protest
Knoxville News Sentinel [TN]

"Some three dozen peace activists and a counter-protester were
arrested this morning at the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant during a
commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the initial 'Plowshares' anti-
nuclear weapons protest that took place Sept. 9, 1980. Fourteen of the
anti-nuclear weapons protesters will be charged for crossing a fence
onto Y-12 property, officials said. They will be taken to the Blount
County Detention Center for processing. Another 23 face state charges
for blocking a roadway into the plant and will be booked at the
Anderson County Jail in Clinton. A counter-protester who blew his horn
incessantly at the activists and then got out of his car will be
charged with disorderly conduct at the Anderson County Jail. The
protest drew a couple of hundred people, including some who have been
involved in acts of civil disobedience for decades." (07/05/10)

9) Judges: Obama can't close Yucca Mountain nuke dump
McClatchy Newspapers

"Democratic Rep. John Spratt and Republican Rep. Joe Wilson don't
agree on much, yet the South Carolina congressmen are cheering a new
ruling that denied the bid by the U.S. Energy Department to withdraw
its application for a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain in
Nevada. Three administrative judges within the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission ruled last week that Congress had designated Yucca Mountain
in 1987 to receive highly toxic waste from the Savannah River Site on
the S.C./Georgia border and other complexes that built atom bombs
during the Cold War. The panel found that President Barack Obama and
Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu, a nuclear physicist, lacked
the power to close the Yucca repository unilaterally; doing so, it
ruled, would require another act of Congress." [Hat tip -- Raw Story]

10) WY: State threatens to sell Grand Teton land
Associated Press

"For sale: Two square miles of Grand Teton National Park. Majestic
views of the Teton Range. Prime location for luxury resort, home
development. Pristine habitat for moose, elk, wolves, grizzlies.
Price: $125 million. Call: Governor Dave Freudenthal. Wyoming is
trying to force the Interior Department to trade land, minerals, or
mineral royalties for 1,366 acres it owns within the majestic park. If
federal officials don't agree to a deal -- soon -- Freudenthal
threatens to put a For Sale sign on the property. Wyoming has owned
the land since statehood in 1890, when the federal government set
aside land in new Western states to be mined, logged, or leased to
raise money for public education. Wyoming kept its so-called 'school
sections' after Grand Teton National Park was established in
1950." (07/05/10)

11) Locked out: 12 million without a country
Christian Science Monitor

"Until she graduated from high school, Sonia Camilise never had reason
to question her nationality. She was born here in the Dominican
Republic and grew up speaking Spanish, dancing merengue, and watching
the boys play baseball in the grassy lot outside her family's small
house. 'I am Dominican,' she says. 'Of course.' But two years ago,
when she went to get a certified copy of her birth certificate -- a
necessary part of the college application process here -- she
discovered that her government had a different perspective. The civil
registry officers told her that she was not Dominican, but Haitian.
Their reasoning: Ms. Camilise did not have the papers to show that her
father, a Haitian immigrant, had legal residency here when she was
born. It was a shock, she says. In the Dominican Republic, citizens
need new copies of their birth certificates for everything from
enrolling in university to getting a visa to acquiring a marriage
certificate. Now her government was essentially rejecting her -- part
of a new policy that Dominican officials say is necessary to combat
illegal immigration." (07/05/10)

12) FEC ruling widens "media" definition
Boston Globe

"A little-noticed Federal Election Commission ruling that expands the
definition of 'media' to include a partisan film production group is
the latest in a series of actions eroding legislative limits on the
influence of money in politics. 'We're really returning, seemingly
inexorably, toward an entirely deregulated system,' said Thomas Mann,
who studies campaign finance at the Brookings Institution, a
Washington think tank. 'It was a rather breathtaking decision.' The
commission voted June 10 to designate the filmmaker Citizens United a
'press entity,' equating its often highly partisan work -- including
films attacking Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton and President Obama
-- with the work of nightly newscasts. The result, analysts say, is
that the group is not required to disclose its role in sponsoring
political projects or activities, or reveal the source of its funding.
Thus, it becomes impossible to discern its influence in the political
process." (07/05/10)

13) Mexico: Resurgence eludes old rulers in state elections that show
no party on top
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"After a Super Sunday of elections across Mexico that was widely seen
as a test for the 2012 presidential race and the nation's future, the
winner turns out to be -- well, not really anyone. President Felipe
Calderon's party is weak, the left is in collapse and the
Institutional Revolutionary Party that is on a tentative path to
recapture the presidency it held for 71 years was shown to be
vulnerable. Drug cartel intimidation dissuaded many from voting at
all." (07/05/10)

14) Petraeus takes over Afghan fight, vows "to win" it
Fort Dodge Messenger News

"'We are in this to win,' Gen. David Petraeus said as he took the
reins of an Afghan war effort troubled by waning support, an
emboldened enemy, government corruption and a looming commitment to
withdraw troops -- even with no sign of violence easing. Petraeus, who
pioneered the counterinsurgency strategy he now oversees in
Afghanistan, has just months to show progress in turning back
insurgents and convince both the Afghan people and neighboring
countries that the U.S. is committed to preventing the country from
again becoming a haven for al-Qaida and its terrorist
allies." (07/05/10)

15) DC: Some residents say it's too hard to get a gun
National Public Radio

"'The toughest thing about getting a gun in the [DC] is finding a gun
store. There are none. You have to drive to a neighboring state like
Maryland to buy a weapon. But if you have a D.C. driver's license,
you'll have to transfer the weapon to someone with a federal firearms
license in D.C. He takes possession of the gun from us,' Donald says.
'He charges a transfer fee -- I believe it's $125.' 'You have to be
fingerprinted, you have to submit photographs, you have to take a
class that's supposed to consist of four hours of classroom and an
hour of range time with ... a District of Columbia approved
instructor,' he explains. That can bring the cost of registering to
more than $500." [editor's note: Of course the thugs and criminals
have NO problems getting an "illegal" gun - MLS] (07/05/10)

16) Nigeria: Navy says pirates released foreign sailors
MSNBC

"Twelve foreign sailors taken hostage off Nigeria's oil-rich and
restive southern delta were safely released Sunday, a Nigerian naval
spokesman said. Commodore David Nabaida told The Associated Press that
all the men were in good condition after pirates dropped them onto a
fishing trawler off the coast of the Niger Delta. The captain of the
trawler then informed naval authorities of their release." (07/05/10)

MSNBC

"Iran complained on Monday that its planes had been denied fuel in
Germany, Britain and the United Arab Emirates, and Washington said
private firms were making the "right choices" by cutting business ties
with Tehran. In London, The Financial Times newspaper said oil major
BP had stopped refueling Iranian jets. BP declined to confirm the
report but said: 'We fully comply with any international sanctions
imposed in countries where we operate.'" (07/05/10)

one week after President Benigno Aquino III took office vowing to put
an end to political assassinations. Fernando Baldomero, who escaped an
attempt on his life earlier this year, was gunned down on Monday in
front of his house as he was about to take his child to school,

parliamentary elections next year. Full final results of the election
are due later Monday but with 95 percent of the votes counted
Komorowski -- of the governing Civic Platform party -- has 52.63

21) FL: Clerk shoots armed robber
The Armed Citizen

"A man who tried to rob a convenience store at gunpoint ended up being
killed by the store clerk Saturday night, according to police. The
apparent robber, who has not been identified, ran into the Community
Food Market at 139 Northwest Fifth Ave. around 10 p.m. and tried to
rob the store, according to a police report. A clerk saw the man with
the gun and ducked behind the counter before the robber started
shooting at the clerk. The clerk grabbed a gun from behind the counter
and returned fire, hitting the robber. After the shootout, the clerk
ran from the store and called 911, according to the report. Police
found the would-be robber lying on the ground in front of the store
still clutching a semiautomatic handgun in his right hand." (07/03/10)

Commercial Appeal

"Two would-be robbers forgot to ask their victim a key question: Do
you have a gun and know how to use it? The 21-year-old Bartlett man's
answer might have prevented the two 16-year-olds from being shot.
Instead, an exchange of gunfire between the Bartlett man and the
robbers Wednesday night left one teenager dead and the other
wounded. ... The shootout occurred about 10 p.m. Wednesday at the
Edgewater Apartments east of Sycamore View and south of Raleigh-
LaGrange. According to Moore, one of the suspects fired at the man
during an attempted robbery. The victim, who was within 3 feet of one
robber and about 10 from the other, fired five shots, four of them
striking the would-be robbers." (07/03/10)
