Maya render crashes ( Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified )

We recently updated our servers, so had to reinstall Royal render.

unfortunately we still got Version 6.02.42 , so Im wondering if an update could fix my problem or if its a Maya bug?

Whenever I render a scene with Maya 2015 Sp2 and mental ray the render starts fine, but after a while the render job crashes. If I clear the Error log  and enable the job again ,
the render starts and renders a few frames. Then after some time it starts crashing again.
The scene renders fine in the viewport and also rendered without problems with Royal Render before the reinstall. Actually I got the problem with all my project files.

This seems to occur only with Maya and mental ray.

3ds Max and mental render fine without crashing.

The errror log says that it couldnt find a file. Im not sure which one Royal Render doesnt find, because all files including textures are stored on a file server.

Will an update fix this? Already told my boss to get this update :)

Hmm also getting theses errors on some machines, maybe they got something to do with it?

the error code 2 us returned by Maya.
And although RR tries to translate the error code 2 (with the Windows system error code table), the error code 2 can be anything.
Usually the error is in the render log somewhere else for such a low error code.

Hmm so it has nothing to do with Royal Render?

 But Maya and Windows?  I mean this would make sense, since 3ds Max works fine.
Not sure where to look now though.

hmm just noted that the admin account didnt have all permissions for the Royal Render folder, where the app and files of Royal Render are stored.
Maybe this was the error? Also updated to v. 6.02.50.

Unfortunatley cant check at the moment if Maya renders now without problems, since there are 3ds Max files rendering at the moment.

Maya, not windows.
Does Maya crash with a simple scene? Cube, cam, light?

No, then I assume RR would not even be able to start Maya.

Just created a simple cube with a light and and camera.

Well the first time I submitted the file it crashed the RRserver. Never had this before.
It had an error message in rrControl and the RRclient-watch went offline (red) . And then the rrserver started again, but the cube scene in my rrControl was gone.
Wasnt fast enough to make a screenshot of the rrControl error message.

Then I submitted the cube scene again and it rendered fine. Not sure what that was.



I also rendered one frame of a project file on my workstation. Well it first seems to render the frame fine and copies the frame. But then it started to render the same frame again resulting in a crash.

Then it started to render the same frame again on my workstation and finally crashing the render.

Well maybe I should attach it? Otherwise its quite a long message.
Could this kso_maya.mel file error maybe be the cause of the crashing?

I can see multiple warnings about a file wrap/foilNormale.tif.
And there are a lot of
Shader declaration "" has not been loaded.
Then some unknown connections named e.g.
"sIBL_controls.backgroundGamma"


Do you get the same errors when you load the scene in the Maya UI on
that machine?

Well I think Im getting closer with the problem.

That file " wrap/foilNormale.tif." is just a normal texture, The sIBL connection is also some texture file for an HDRI texture.

I think this is where my problem starts, for some reason the render manager or Maya loses the texture paths after a while?

I rerendered my simple cube scene on renderlayers. One render layer is just the cube, a light and a camera, nothing else. The other render layer is
the same cube, but I only attached a texture to it.

Without texture it renders fine. The scene with texture first starts rendering and after a while the renderfarms keep crashing, because of the " Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified..'" error. I guess it is looking for the texture?

The weird thing though is , that it manages to render the scene with texture about 30 frames and then crashes. I guess the more textures I have in a scene, the sooner the crashing occurs.


I noticed that the project folder on the network, where all projects are stored has a different name than the drive letter that is leading to the project folder.

So on the network its called " Netzwerk -> FF-FS-01-> Projects"  (\\FF-FS-01\Projects)
but then we have the shortcut to it, which is a P:\  drive ,   there the drive is called "Film Projekte"

In the rrConfig the Drive P: is leading to the UNC path \\FF-FS-01\Projects. So maybe the drive P: should also be named Projects instead of Film Projekte?

Probably 3dsMax doesnt have a problem with that, because it somehow manages the texture pathes differently?

Ill ask the server admin to rename that "Film Projekte" folder , maybe it solves my problems. Hopfully.

The render manager or Maya does not change the scene file, once you save it before submission it is not changed any more.
 
The name of a drive does not matter.  As you either enter p:\ or \\fileserver\projects
 
If it works some time, then it does not seem to be the path or drive mapping.
Or does it always work on some clients and never on others?
 
How many clients render on the scene?What OS has the fileserver?

well we have 8 clients rendering. All of them crash , when I try to render a scene with textures in it . Render layers , where I render just an alpha mask with a surface shader or geometry without textures render without crashing.

The scenes with textures render on 8 machines, then one machine crashes and tries to rerender the frame, but after a while it only crashes and then goes to the next render layer. Once all machines crashed on the render layer  Royal render just disables the render and continues with the next render layer. Till those crash.

The scenes with textures render with crashes, if I keep clearing the error messages and enable the job again. But a scene, which normally would render within a day now needs  like a week or longer to render. Because I need to enable them again and again.
Well it looks like this at the moment. Some machine render 3 frames then crash, I reenable them,  they render and crash after a while.

So the green ones managed to render something  and finally also crash after a few frames.

We have Windows 7 ultimate on the renderfarm clients and the file server and rrServer machine both have Windows Server 2012 R2.
Does this not work together?

Im still thinking that those network drives are somehow messed up? Not sure where though.
If I set the Maya project to the network \\FF-FS-01\Projects\1415_ProjectName\3d_maya my texture paths become for example :

P:\1415_ProjectName\3d_maya\textures\behaelter\Industrial Pack\WoodCrate.jpg

and the rendered images save to //FF-FS-01/Projects/1415_ProjectName/3d_maya/render/renderlayer

the textures point to the P drive instead to be absolute. It should be without the P: drive letter?



Now if I set the same Maya project to that P:\ drive  my texture pathes are absolute:

 textures\behaelter\Industrial Pack\WoodCrate.jpg

and the renders are saved to P:/1415_ProjectName/3d_maya/render/renderlayer
I guess this is where its messed up? Already tried to reset the Maya workspace.mel , but this didnt help.

Or is it because the RRServer is seperate to the file server? The render clients and the RRserver all are installed with the admin account of the servers. So it has permissions to read and write files with the admin account.

An UNC path works all the time on all machines. A drive mapping does only work if map it. (but as it renders sometimes, it should be setup right on these machines)

No. The issue is in the maya file. RR starts the render fine.

If it would be an permission issue, then it would fail every time on the same machines.
 
All sounded like a fileserver share limitation. If you try to render with more than x clients.
But you are using a server OS, so this does not seem to be an issue. (if nobody has setup a connection limit for the share)

hmm ok found something new. I just saved my simple Maya scene as an .ma file instead of an .mb file with Maya 2015 Sp2. The same scene as .ma renders fine with no crash at all.

Then I tried to render the .mb file with Maya 2014 and it rendered also without crash.

Then I reopened the same .mb scene with Maya 2015 Sp2 again and the renderfarm starts to crash after a while.

Looks like .mb files are corrupt for rendering in Maya 2015 Sp2 ?

I´ll check if this also works for my heavy scene project files.

Hmm the heavy scene saved as .ma also crashed. I think I just reinstall Maya 2015.
I think this new Autodesk Application Manager somehow messed something up during the update to Sp2.

With Maya 2014 I also dont get the kso_maya_mel errors. Only in Maya 2015. So I will reinstall it and for now try to render with Maya 2014.

The kso_error message is not an error produced by the kso script.
It is an error while the script is executing another function (Scene load)
You do not get the errors in the log if you load your scene in Maya UI?

Well when I load the scene I dont get any errors.

Yesterday there was an update to Maya 2015 SP3. I am not sure if it fixed something, but so far I can render without crashes.
Dont know what it actually fixed.
Maybe it broke something , when I updated to Maya Sp2? I updated the version before by downloading the update from the Autodesk website instead of using this Autodesk Application Manager.
Did the update to Sp3 with the Application Manager this time.

Also tried to rerender my simple cube scene that crashed in SP2. With Sp3 it rendered without a crash. I hope this will also work on more complicated scenes. :)

I see how I get along with Sp3 now.
