Hi batch exported two shots with gz ass files - how can I get those ass files rendering through kick on RR. I'm using Maya mtoa.

Hi

Please open the rrSubmitter and load one of the .ass files of the sequence.

To render with Arnold Standalone, you have to copy it into RR.

Please see section setup:

http://www.royalrender.de/help8/index.html?Arnold.html

Hi Holger,

adding the ass archive to the submitter and rendering works fine. But I get some very strange output files. Seems like some are being copied over properly, where others are missing the extension. Do you know what might be causing that?

and then rrControl doesn't find the files, and they are being kicked off again. All my machines were running through the night, overwriting the render files with missing extension

This was the only suspicious thing I found. This is a log from 1 client. It's not present in others.

Hi

There has to be something wrong with the .ass file.

Please select the job in rrControl.
Then execute "Export debug info - selected job(s)" via the menu "Debug".
Please upload it via www.RoyalRender.de/upload_r.php

Hi

You are right. The issue is linked to that error message.
I compared the first render log of Walle with the second one.
And the difference between them is this message:

[kick] trying to overwrite the original '' driver with a '.exr'
driver, renamed as a '' file

The Arnold kick version seems to be the same as the one you used to
export the .ass files.

Some render logs are fine and some not. E.g the first Eve log shows
the right extension, the second broken ones. And the other way round
with Walle render logs files.

The only explanation left is that the .ass files 0-30 are broken and
40+ are fine (nor sure about the ones 30-40 as RR did not tried to
render them).

Please compare the file date of your .ass files.
Is there some time gap between 30 and 40?

Thanks for digging into this Holger.
The ass files were all run at the same time and I can't see any weirdness between timestamps or filesize.
It's quite bizarre, also if I retry it seems to work. Could it be something to do with the ass.gz compression?
Right now I'm just renaming the files by hand ( adding the .exr ) extension so they won't get overwritten again and again.

Is there a reason why the mtoa RR submit doesn't work the same as the HtoA RR submit. I mean, in HtoA I enable the Archive option, and then two jobs are created automatically with waiting enabled. Why can't we get the same behaviour with mtoa?

... adding to the previoius message. I know the is the AssNRender option, but that one seems to launch Maya write the ass file and kick it. Depending on how many chunks are assigned to the job Maya is launched several times. I was hoping I could batch write out the ass files, and then use only kick.

Hi

>Could it be something to do with the ass.gz compression?

No, if you cannot decompress it, Arnold would not load anything.

>I mean, in HtoA I enable the Archive option, and then two jobs are created automatically with

I can add it as a feature request.

The main reason it exists for Houdini is that it is required for Houdini. Because rendering a Houdini scene with Arnold takes a Houdini license and that one is expensive.

Rendering a Maya scene with Arnold (Or Redshift/VRay) does not take a Maya license.

And .ass files is an additional step and takes additional fileserver space.  The only reason to render .ass files for most companies have been some Maya scenes that did not fit into memory while rendering.

Therefore have not been requests for it.

Beside this workaround config that you found. It solves the issue with the memory usage and the company does not have to fiddle around with .ass files on their fileserver. It is just like rendering a Maya scene.

Can you upload the .ass file 10 and 50?

Perhaps I find something.

Otherwise you should try to ask in the Autodesk Area forum.

The Solidangle guys are there as well.
