Hello everyone! I've been having huge issues with the new royal render (rrSubmit_Modo_7.0+), hoping for some help troubleshooting.  When I render anything, sooner or later the rendering will stop, and the error log reveals the following:

R 79| Error: Job frozen

R 80| CPU Usage: 1.0 Memory Usage: 15201 Processes: 4

R 81| PID:5293688 CPU:0.0 Mem: 3 Name:CMD.EXE

R 82| PID:5293680 CPU:0.0 Mem: 3 Name:CONHOST.EXE

R 83| PID:5293784 CPU:2.7 Mem:15189 Name:MODO_CL.EXE

R 84| PID:5293740 CPU:0.0 Mem: 6 Name:FOUNDRYCRASHHANDLER.EXE

R 85|

R 86| Error in this log file (76): error 87: the parameter is incorrect..

R 87| Error in this log file: error: job frozen

R 88| Abort because renderer froze

This happens at any time. Sometimes inside of 1 frame rendered, sometimes after 20 frames rendered. All attempts to restart do nothing. "clear error & enable job" does nothing. What is the likely culprit for these crashes? If modo render freezes, why doesn't RR restart it like backburner?

thanks for any advice,

-Alberto

Almost forgot to mention: Running modo 10.2v1, on a farm with 4 machines. Some with win 7 64bit, some with win 10 64bit.

Hi

There is a process running named FOUNDRYCRASHHANDLER.EXE.

Therefore I assume modo crashed and the crash handler opened.
I do not know this crash handler, but if it is like all other crash handlers, then it asks you to send some crash information to the vendor.
The crash handler waits until you press a button and RR waits until all processed are finished.  This is the issue.

RR then detects that the application is not doing anything any more for x minutes and terminates all processes.
After it has terminated the processes, it will start Modo again.

I would recommend to update Modo in case the specific crash was fixed.
Do you get crashes while working on the scene? If you do, please send the crash report that they can fix it.

I have loggged a ticket to check if the crash handler can be deactivated completely.

regards,
Holger Schönberger

Holy cow I think that does explain everything. I will render the scene manually to see if it crashes to verify...

So I ran the job with the option to ignore freeze detection.  The good news is that jobs stay green now, but the bad news is that jobs are still hanging on the crash handler. The modo website was down yesterday. Does anyone know how to turn off the crash handler?  Im also concerned that this has never been a problem before. Why is it a problem now?

Hi

Some Modo feature in the scene you have never used before.

We got the flag to disable crash reports.
Please copy the file in this zip
www.RoyalRender.de/download/170216_modocrash.zip
into RR/render_apps/_scripts and its subfolder rr_original.

Hello Holger! Thank you again for the assistance.

To answer your first question, nothing we are doing uses any new modo features. We are going through two tests. Test 1 is a standard modo file with a standard sphere keyframed to move 150 keyframes. The second test is an older file that we previously rendered without a problem.

I unzipped and installed the files (3D08__Modo6_LayeredExr.cfg and 3D08__Modo6.cfg). I added both these files to the rr folder on our file server and also rr>render_apps>scripts and rr>render_apps>scripts>rr_original as per your instructions.
Did I install it right? I copy pasted into directories and ran the job as normaly. Did I need to restart? Did I need to re-install things?

Things seemed to go well at first, but soon I had another program frozen error. Also with a new failure too:
"Feb 16. 12:30.43| WRN {VZF } Job has low CPU usage since 20 minutes (12:08). Limit is set to 1.9 cores. Current system usage on one core: 220.0, current job usage 100%, max job usage 1.0. Abortminutes set to abortminutes+15min (+15 for app start and scene load, renderer never started))"

Sorry, my fault.
The folder is   RR/render_apps/_config/ and not scripts.
There are already files that you have to replace.

Holger,
thank you for the files! I replaced the existing files, but the problem persists. Below is the log for the most recent render attempt. I am very confused. Why was this not a problem before and it is now?  Does modo 10 work with rrv7? Can we downgrade so the farm can work again? Is that an option?

Hi

The only change is that we are now using the modo commandline renderer and before we have used the UI version that was available in old modo versions only. But the commandline version should actually be more stable.

You could try to change that if you are on windows. Open rrConfig, tab client config, select the client, tab render apps.
Change modo_cl.exe into modo.exe.

Holger,
thanks! I am in the process fo removing sensitive data from the file and re-testing to make sure the error still occurs. Will upload files, data, logs and as much info as I can when all of this is complete. Thanks!

Holger,
logs and scene file were uploaded. Thanks for the help, really need the farm back online! Let me know if there is anything missing that you need. The modo file, textures, and error logs should all be in the zip file uploaded.

cheers,
Alberto

Hi

We have been able to repro the freeze with that scene file, but not
with other scene files. But have not yet been able to investigate
what's different with that scene file.
But it is a Modo bug.

Holger,
In an odd way... this is good news. The file was originally from modo 9. Does that help??

I also noticed that the renderer is very slow on one or two of our machines.
The highest peak is about 20% CPU usage, which is strange.
It should not trigger the freeze detection as it is still high enough, but still something that could perhaps be optimized.

I have time after the presentation at Foundry Townhall today to investigate further.

Ok, the scene is rendering on a different group of machines.
Could it be a memory issue as the scene takes more than 10GB of RAM?
(RAM usage is mostly geometry)

Note: 75% of the render time is actually the preprocessing of the
frame (Geo creation and GI if you use it). If you could reduce the
geo, the scene would render way faster.

Ummm it's a few spheres. I'm no expert in this space but it seems to me that two spheres with three 1k textures should not be hanging up. Graphic cards can handle 10x that amount in real time, and a blade with four processors and with 16 cores each can't? That doesn't sound right to me...

I guess the real question Holger, is: to the best of your knowledge is this a modo issue or a royal render issue?

> Ummm it's a few spheres.
It's way more than just a few spheres.
Note: It looks like some rendertime generated geometry (Like
displacement does).
If you open the scene in Modo and execute Render Current View, then
you see some stats at the right of the render view. Check the section
Memory, Geometry Cache.
On my test it has increased to 7 GB.

And the section Geometry/Polygons states 80 Mill polys in the end.

Royal Render does everything right.
It tells Modo what to render.

Ok holger. Not sure the problem, but if it isn't rr, i need to look further into modo. Thank you for all your help and support.
