Hi,
We now have a dedicated machine we want to use for the server, instead of running it on the file server. What would be the steps to install the server service on the new machine and shutdown the service on the old machine, considering that the RR folder on the network will not change?
Thanks!
F
You have 3 ways to change the rrServer.
A) COMPLETE RE-INSTALL
B) DIFFERENT FILESERVER
(How to change the rrServer machine and the fileshare)
C) SAME FILESERVER
(How to change the rrServer machine, but keep the *same* fileshare)
---
### A) COMPLETE RE-INSTALL
Just install RR and upload a new license request via rrConfig.
NOTE: If you want to reinstall into the same folder, then DO NOT use the reinstall feature of the installer. It keeps the old config files.
Note: If you do NOT reinstall into the same location, then there is an automated way to move RR setting on each machine to a new location. (RR settings like submission plugins, client service, start menu links)
Please see the sections about the relink file and service/submission reinstall on this help page:
http://www.royalrender.de/help/MoveRRfolder.html
---
### B) DIFFERENT FILESERVER
(How to change the rrServer machine *and* the fileshare)
Either do a clean install OR move your RR program files folder:
http://www.royalrender.de/help/MoveRRfolder.html
Then follow the steps from above "C) SAME FILESERVER".

### C) SAME FILESERVER
(How to change the rrServer machine, but keep the *same* fileshare.)
There are two descriptions for RR version 8.
How to change the rrServer for RR version 8 - Desktop/UI computer:
Note: You need to start an UI application. This does NOT work if your rrServer is a linux terminal only machine. In this case you have to follow the next description.
1. Generate License request
Start rrConfig on your new rrServer machine. Open tab License.
Press [Alt] on the keyboard and click on "Server Mac (HostID)" at the top left.
Choose "Temporaly" to not break your current farm until you have the new license file.
Choose the right HostID via the select button.
Save request and upload it.
2. Wait for the new license file.
3. Start rrControl (original existing RR installation).
4. Open rrConfig again, this time choose "Permanent".
Press Save.
5. Replace the old license file with the new one
6. Install the server service on the new machine. (via rrWorkstationInstaller)
Wait a minute (you can check rrServerWatch or the task manager for the rrServerConsole process)
7. Send a restart command to all clients via the previously started rrControl.
Wait for the clients to get offline. (They restart and wait for the new rrServer)
8. Start rrControl on a different machine (This allows you to see the old rrServer and the new rrServer status).
It should connect to the new rrServer and shows the Clients as they connect to the new rrServer.
9. Start rrWorkstationInstaller on the old rrServer.
Check all options and press Deinstall.
(Note: rrServer service is not available, but the option Client service will uninstall the old server service as well)
How to change the rrServer for RR - Linux console:
1. Generate License request
Install RR on any temp folder on your new server machine. (named [tempRR] in the following)
Start the rrServer.
Close it again.
Start rrConfig and generate a request.
Do not delete the temp installation for now.
2. Wait for the new license file.
3. Start rrControl of the main RR installation.
4. Edit the file [RR]\sub\cfg_global\globalconfig.ini
Open the file [tempRR]\sub\cfg_global\globalconfig.ini
Copy the lines
nServerName=
nServerMACAddress=
nServerIP1=
nServerIP2=
nServerIP3=
nServerOS=
nServerOSInfo=
from [ tempRR ] to [RR].
Save the file.
[tempRR] is not required any more, it can be deleted.
5. Replace the license file with the new one.
6. Install the server service on the new machine.(via rrWorkstationInstaller)
9. Deinstall the rrServer on the old machine.
Execute rrWorkstationInstaller -deinstall -all in a terminal.
