Hello:

I am planning on attending graduate school and on entering the raptor research community.  At this time, I am spending my time looking for various graduate programs with professors conducting research on raptors.  I searched RRF's website, but I could not find any information regarding my inquiry.  Would it be a possibility for RRF or ECRR to compile a list of professors (and the universities at which they teach) who are active in such research.  I know that such queries have been addressed by other ornithological groups, but these are focused on general ornithology and not raptors.  I suggest this as a consideration for RFF or ECRR as a beneficial source for students interested in the field of raptor research.  Thank you.

Ethan,

I realize this list isn't nearly complete - but it's a start.  It's difficult to create a more complete list because some people work on raptors opportunistically - some have worked on raptors, but don't currently, etc.  Really, I would focus on what questions you might be interested in (e.g., behavioral, population dynamics, conservation, etc.) and use google scholar to cross reference those types of questions with things like "hawk" or "falcon" to see who might be asking interesting questions with raptors.  Scanning through recent Journal of Raptor Researches could also be helpful in seeing who is actively doing research and what they are doing.

Honestly, for us to get this list together (and I don't think it's a bad idea) would take some time - and I suspect you are eager to begin your search for grad programs.  If you have more specific interests (geographical, research, etc.) some members here might be able to help direct you to people that line up with your interests.  Good luck in your hunt,

Chris

Hi Ethan,

Boise State University has an M.S. program devoted to raptor biology. I suggest visiting the site at http://biology.boisestate.edu/graduate-programs/masters-in-raptor-biology/ to learn more. I am currently in my first semester in the program and the experience has been overwhelmingly positive to date.

Good luck!

Tom

Ethan,
I am also hoping to pursue a degree studying raptors & the Avian Sciences program at University of California Davis looks absolutely amazing! Joshua Hull is a professor whose research involves working with the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory.

Hi Ethan and Melissa,

Thanks for the emails.   I think this is an excellent idea and hopefully one that you both may be able to contribute to.  I’m the chair of the ECRR Committee and am always looking for additional help to further ECRR issues in RRF.  Most of our efforts thus far have been focused on the annual conferences, but I think this would be another worthy endeavor.

Would anyone out there be willing to start compiling a list of graduate advisors who work with raptors (and their associated contact info. and perhaps even their areas of expertise)?  I suspect we could compile a fairly comprehensive list fairly quickly and painlessly.

If anyone is interested, please email me directly at my email address below so we can organize a bit.  We can then work collectively to compile a list and figure-out the best way to serve that information on the web.

Thanks,

Travis

I'm also interested in doctoral work with raptors in the Oregon/Washington/Idaho area. Currently located just outside of Portland, OR and hold an M.S. in ecology. Would like to work on wind turbine research. Anyone know of programs in the area? Would have to do some sort of long distance situation as I need to stay put in the Portland area, but could travel on a weekly/monthly basis.
Thanks!
