Hiya woodworkers -

I'm working on a table top using Beetle Kill Pine. My client expressed concern regarding the yellowing that occurs when this wood is stained 'natural' color. The blue is great, they want me to reduce the yellowing if at all possible.

Any suggestions on an approach for this one?

Thanks and regards,

Yellowing is substantially decreased if you use water based finishes instead of oil based. Start with a water based sanding sealer then a water based finish. Minwax has an excellent selection of water based finishes to choose from. Deft has a water based polyurethane rated for interior/exterior which might give the durability you would want in a table as well. I have used the Minwax products on aspen and maple with good success and it also avoids the splotching you frequently get with light colored porous woods.

Hope this helps.
