When ordering on the internet is there a coupon code or checkout code for Lie-Neilsen, Woodcraft or Rockler?  Or should we just call the 800 number?

Thanks

The are all portable.  I'd start witht the following:

The first three tools follow my rule that if the tool has a blade,
"own your own".  Community bladed tools get dull quickly from overuse
and abuse (dropping them, for example).  If you are in control of the
blade, you can sharpen it to perfection and it will stay that way for
a long time.  Learn to sharpen if you haven't already.

LOW ANGLE BLOCK PLANE. I like the Lee Nielsen 102.  Lie Nielsen gives
students a 10% discount on anything they make if, on your order form,
you tell them you are at RRCC. Lie Nielsen is a FOTS (Friend of the
Shop) and many students buy from them.  I buy from Lie Nielsen because
of that.  Please thank them for their support.  Other manufacturers
make nice block planes, too.  Lee Valley is a reputable name with a
little lower price.  Remember that Woodcraft and Rockler give students
a 10% discount, too.  It's probably a toss up whether you pay sales
tax here or shipping and no tax from Maine (Lie Nielsen).

CHISELS.  More important than brand is absolute sharpness. Medium to
high quality chisels will do the job.  Rand recommends Marpel as
medium quality, very reasonable priced, chisels for starters.  My
Marpels set is a couple of years old.  They sharpen well and do the
job.  Superior, high priced chisels include Lie Nielsen and Blue
Spruce.

SPOKESHAVE.  You'll use this to shape the neck. Lee Valley makes one.
Lie Nielsen's is gorgeous, though.  Flat sole.

RULER.  Simple enough, but I like a rigid ruler.  In addition to
measurements, you can check things for flatness by laying the edge of
the ruler on the item.  Lots of manufacturers.

SQUARE.  You can get a plain, non-ruler type, but I wouldn't.  I'd get
a sliding "T" or "combination square.  The advantage over the simple
square is that you can measure in from edges without trying to balance
a flat ruler.  You can measure the depth of holes.  You can  also set
the ruler to measure identical distances from an edge.  It may be one
of those things you need to see in action to appreciate.  If you're
unlikely to need to mark/measure a 45 degree angle, the "T" square is
fine.  I have a 4", but occasionally  something longer is needed.  6"
might be better.  Starett is very high quality.  again, there are lots
of manufactures

Happy shopping!

Steph-

if you phone Lie Neilsen, and tell them you are a RRCC student,
they'll give you a 10% discount. Be sure to phone them.

Rockler and Woodcraft (Denver only) will offer a RRCC student discount
when you present your active Spring 2010 student ID in person at the
store. You should also get a "fine woodworking sticker" for your ID
from Patrick Shannon, the shop manager.

hope this helps!

Having just been through this today...

For Rockler, you need to go in with your student ID - they seem pretty
strict about seeing the ID with the current semester on it. Most
things get the 10% discount except power tools.

I couldn't figure out how to get the discount from Woodcraft online -
I think you need to call them.

For Lie-Nielsen, call them and tell them what course you're enrolled
in. They are super friendly and will happily give you the 10%
discount over the phone. It's hard to get it through the website.

If you're in the Lutherie courses, for LMI, if you get your online
package shipped to RRCC SFW they will automatically give you the 10%
discount (confirmed this on the phone today). For Stewart-Mac they
didn't do the same thing... you have to call them to place your order.

Hope this helps.

As I think Gregory pointed out, the RRCC discount is only good at the
Woodcraft store here in Denver and they too are pretty strict about
having a current student ID so if you don't have a student ID go to the
Student Life desk (making sure you have your schedule or some other form
of paper showing that you are a current student) and get one. That ID
is also good for discounts at movies, museums, restaurants and computers
and software, as well as acts as a library card for the LARC, and free
use of the RRCC fitness center.
