Wellhere in the USA we're back from our long Memorial Day weekend, during which by tradition, hamburgers, booze of all descriptions, and loud, violent blockbuster movies are all three avidly consumed. I happened to catch Deadpool 2 with the fam (we laughed, we cried, it was better than Cats) and despite the much-discussed risk of "superhero burnout" you might have heard from some killjoys out there, it was in its irreverent levity a fine antidote to the operatic sturm und drang of Infinity War (during which we laughed, we cried, etc. and so forth).

As it turns out, the film's director, David Leitch, has been a CFB brand ambassador since 2013, which is how the company got into the film, but it wasn't really an official product placement (Carl F. Bucherer isn't in the time machine business, at least not yet). As this was something of a sub rosa Easter egg for sharp-eyed watch enthusiasts, there are no official pictures, but aside from the movie, you can see the watch/time machine very briefly in some of the YouTube coverage of the movie's (in)famous post-credit sequences. In the one below, by Erik Voss, you can see it at about 4:37 (on edge; it looks rather like a Seiko Tuna) and again, close up, at about 5:23. Please note that there are (obvs) major spoilers in the video!

This film is the only MCU release slated for 2024. Marvel Studios is scaling back its output after several box office disappointments, with The Marvels (2023) being the most recent failure. As "superhero fatigue" affects projects across both the MCU and DC, the slower release strategy might ultimately benefit the franchise in the long run.

Based on the teaser clips and official trailer, Deadpool & Wolverine will see Deadpool and Wolverine team up to save the world and perhaps the entire multiverse. Director Shawn Levy shared on Good Morning America that the film centers around a "surprising friendship."

Viewers should be aware that there are sustained fight scenes involving blood, characters getting impaled, and multiple skeletons. There are several moments involving explicit depictions of sexual behavior and desire, as well as conversations about drug use.

The age requirement to watch an R-rated movie varies. Typically, those under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least 25 years old. In most theaters, children under the age of 6 are not admitted to R-rated movies.

Disney+ has yet to announce the release date for Deadpool & Wolverine. However, based on the release patterns of recent MCU films, Deadpool & Wolverine will likely premiere sometime in the fall of 2024.

In comparison, Disney waited 89 days before debuting The Marvels on its streaming service, which holds the record for the longest theatrical-to-streaming release window for an MCU movie. The Marvels premiered in theaters in November 2023 and debuted on Disney+ on February 7.

The film will be available to purchase and rent earlier on digital VOD platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and YouTube TV, typically within 45 to 65 days after its theatrical premiere. This timeline means that Deadpool & Wolverine could be available digitally as early as September 9, 2024.

Deadpool vs. Wolverine hit cinemas on Wednesday, July 24 and after two movies of teasing their rivalry, sees Wade Wilson face off with James Howlett/Logan as Jackman returns to the role for the first time since 2018.

The movie appears to be debuting strong too, holding an 8.3/10 on imDb after some initial fears that the film may have overextended itself trying to deliver to fans' expectations, but director Shawn Levy seems to have pulled the rabbit out of the hat.

So, from the 45 MCU TV shows and films and an extra 14 X-Men movies to boot too, which ones do you have to watch to ensure you know exactly what's going on when you sit down with your sweet and salted popcorn and recliner chair to watch the drama unfold on the big screen?

It's a marathon set of films but if you want a comprehensive understanding of everything that you're about to see, then this is the way to go to ensure you understand all of the nuances and cameos the latest MCU hit will deliver.

Back in the theater, Savannah pointed out the 2-year-old near the back of the theater. I skimmed the rows behind us and saw what looked like a 5-year-old with his grandparents, a couple of 7- or 8-year-olds, and the girl from the concession stand line who looked about 10.

I saw it with my Sawyer's half-sister, Savannah, who is 23. Sawyer, who is just a few months shy of 17, went to a later showing with our neighbor, Aaron. Because no guy wants to be sitting next to his mom when he watches "Deadpool." (I'll just pray he doesn't ask any questions.)

With a vast pantheon of Marvel movies from several studios produced over the past two-plus decades, it can be an overwhelming experience to find a way into watching the franchise, particularly for newcomers.

The plot concerns an older, more grizzled Wolverine in a world where Mutantkind has become a rarity thanks to decades of bigotry and accidental telepathic seizures suffered by a dementia-riddled Charles Xavier.

After a somewhat tumultuous journey to getting made, Deadpool sliced and diced its way into theaters in 2016. Headlined by the one and only Ryan Reynolds, the film took no prisoners with regard to its extremely irreverent humor.

Deadpool is an origin story for Reynolds' Wade Wilson, in which his superhuman healing abilities become unlocked. The process disfigures him so he sets out on a path of revenge on the man responsible.

After Deadpool became a smash success, Fox was quick to fast-track a follow-up. Deadpool 2 hit two years after the original and was just as zany and witty as its predecessor, if not more so.

It's time to watch all the X-Men movies in order because the mutants have officially joined the MCU. While a proper reboot has yet to be announced (and X-Men '97 is, sadly, not canon), our favorite gang of heroes has made plenty of appearances in the Marvel timeline and is even front-and-center in some upcoming Marvel movies and shows.

But as we all know, the MCU (in all its multiverse glory) can be confusing. And, with a variant of Charles Xavier showing up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Kamala Khan discovering she's a mutant in Ms. Marvel, and Logan returning in Deadpool & Wolverine, there's a lot of X-Men lore to keep track of. But no worries, we've figured it all out so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy. By watching the all X-Men movies in release order, newcomers get to experience the stories as everyone else did, plus it's simply much easier than attempting to make any kind of sense of the time-traveling and parallel universes. Trust us.

Best for: No one, really... This one's just a literal timeline of events without taking into account multiple timelines. It also doesn't align with the MCU when you read our guide on how to watch all the Marvel movies in order, so it's best to skip this version.

There are a lot of issues with the X-Men timelines, so many that they probably warrant a whole article of their own. Yet, by taking the series as two timelines, which almost works in release order, you can just about grasp and understand the series.

Whilst director Shawn Levy has stated that Deadpool & Wolverine is built for entertainment, and audiences do not need prior research, fans of the characters, or those curious about them, can watch a few old favorites to enrich the experience surrounding these red and yellow heroes debuting in the MCU through multiverse shenanigans.

With Deadpool and Wolverine heading into MCU canon, this list mainly focuses on the two characters' time in the Fox Universe, which, now owned by Disney and Marvel Studios, makes it canon to the MCU multiverse.

Watching Deadpool should be essential, as this version of the character is the one who has his story continue for Deadpool & Wolverine. Understanding where the character started will enrich the journey of seeing him again, especially when one understands how big of a risk Deadpool was for the studio, only to now see him lead the MCU into a new era.
