Can anyone suggest a site that does testing for Microsoft Word and/or Excel?  I checked the organizer and don't see that we have anything linked. Do any of you have any suggestions?

Have you checked http://www.gcflearnfree.org/office? There is a quiz on there for Word and Excel.

Ya’ll,

The link below may have some applicability for the more advanced user who may wish to approximate his/her knowledge levels.

The problem with providing “testing sites” is the implicit consequence of “credentialing”.  Some employers may not require credentials, as long as the worker is able to demonstrate proficiencies.  Those employers who may require credentials may not be impressed with “certificates” garnered from a less than creditable free on-line program.

Free on-line “testing” may only be valid and applicable for those who are just starting out, as an interim progress measurement instrument or ego salve.

Just sayin’.

Excellent resource, Alison. Thanks for sharing. About a year ago, we trained on Learning Express Library. I created short videos to learn more about it and posted them on the RRAF Site: https://sites.google.com/site/rrafsite/home/resources-1.

Also, looks like the Learning Express Library has tutorial and classes in Computer Skills Center.

Another excellent resource, Curt. Good for customers who want to test their knowledge. I tried a few questions and found myself a little unsure of the answers. A little relieved I got them right! Like how the answers are given at the end. Staff may want to print these out, make copies, keep them in a file, and give to customers who want to test themselves.

Like the tutorials. Good resource to post to RRAF Site. Didn’t know MS came out with 2016 already!

They’d likely issue a 2016.5 version if the market would support it…….

With further regard to MS’s ongoing licensing fees, has any additional thought been given to cost-free office suite alternatives – OpenOffice, LibreOffice and the like?  The notion of reducing recurring licensing costs had been aired in this forum a while ago…

From what I know, this is always on the table for discussion. A while ago, DEED discussed replacing MS Office with Google docs. This was not received well on the RRAF Site. As most thought Google Docs was not very user friendly. I believe Mary from Minnesotaworks.net brought up OpenOffice as an option. Think we need someone or a team to do some research and report to leadership. Maybe if we have some volunteers we can pursue this.

Eliminating MS’s lock on our budget is an attractive prospect.

I’d be open to participating in a feasibility study… anyone?

I would like to assist with a feasibility study, also.  MaryH

Thank you Mary and Curt for volunteering to take part in this. I’ll speak to David Niermann and find out where this is at and let everyone know if and how we proceed.
