Lisa,

That’s unfortunate that WinWay is going away. I have customers come in all the time with low computer skills, are able to use it, create a resume quick and leave very happy. I hope LearningExpress is just a customer friendly?

Subject: {RRAF} Opinon on Replacing WinWay with Learning Express

Cybrarian is due to replace CRS in or around 4 months from now. The decision has been made not to include WinWay Resume in Cybrarian’s package. We are searching for a replacement for WinWay’s functionality to allow customers to develop their resumes without direct staff assistance. Right now, we are leaning towards LearningExpress Library as a replacement since it has a resume building feature that guides users through much like WinWay. The website also has many other resources/tools, (it looks like they’re updated their job search engine to match indeed.com’s at the moment!). I just went through and registered for the service and played around in it a bit and it seems great- although I had to do a little digging to get to the resume builder. There is no catch for registration except the user must have a personal email. The resume is saved to the account as well- so the user can access their resume whenever they have access to the internet.

Would you please ask RRACP/RRAF folks their opinion on this matter and if LearningExpress would be a good option for replacing WinWay?

Thank you!

Unfortunately without a library card, I along with many of our customers will not be able to register to use this product. It is not uncommon for customers to not have a library card or being unable to obtain one due to having outstanding fines. Please reconsider the continuation of WinWay - as the reality of customers developing their resumes without direct staff service – is in fact a disservice to those who need us most.

Try using this URL to create an account on Learning Express Library. You should be able to create one with only an email account. This is the link on the CRS screen under Testing/Training Tab. Click on this link and then click ‘Register’.

Absolutely agree with and support Carol.  Use of our (presumably) universally available Resource Area services should not be specifically contingent upon a customer’s affiliation with other entities.  We’re in business to facilitate and empower our customers, not devise means to exclude them because of an absence of a membership with an outside agency.

As far as including WinWay Resume in Cybrarian’s package, what are the consequences?   In a visual sense on the new desktop or tabs/choices, are customers still going to be presented with MinnesotaWorks.net first and primarily?  Does Cybrarian provide other package options?

Regarding LearningExpress Library, has anyone run a report regarding the number of customer accounts using the job.s...@state.mn.us email address?   This leads to the following questions: Is there an email verification process?  If not, will LearningExpress Library allow more than one account to be created with the same (job.s...@state.mn.us ) email address?

How many customers are not receiving at least some direct staff assistance?  Typically, customers are encouraged to begin by completing the fill-in-the-blank MinnesotaWorks.net resume so that it is automatically saved section by section and retrievable from anywhere with internet connection.  For those who need/want it, O*NET is pointed out and even copied/pasted to inspire and assist in creating skill statements.  Staff only needs to point out the two websites (MinnesotaWorks.net and OnetOnline.org), either instruct the customer to or arrange the websites on two half windows side by side, and provide them with a key to keyboard shortcuts.

I think it would be a disaster to replace WinWay. The learning Express would work great for a small number of customers. However the majority of our customers are new to writing resumes, to say the least. WinWay provides something  tangible that customers can walk out with and feel good about what they have accomplished at the workforce Center. Before you make this decision, spend a day in the resource room. I feel this would complicate are resource room system and discourage the use of a now working system for a number of customers

Sean is unable to respond to the RRAF Site as he is not a member, so he asked I forward his reply. I'm working on getting him access so he can reply himself.

"Hello,

Sorry if I’m not doing this correctly; I tried to see if I could find any discussion on the RRAF site and reply there but I can’t seem to find anything. I wanted to share some information quickly about LearningExpress Library so that we’re not confused. It won’t require users to have library card to register. If anyone is getting an error message to that effect, please let me know because this is something we need to look in to and fix if we move ahead with LearningExpress Library as a replacement for WinWay. Please see my screen capture below and note the institution is DEED when I’m registering so it doesn’t require a library card. It should be like that for everyone."

I didn't get all of Sean's message and wasn't able to upload an image. Here's the last half of his message.

"The decision to discontinue use of WinWay was made based primarily on financial considerations in renewing the license for the software. It is still possible that we will continue to use WinWay if we receive strong enough feedback from everyone that discontinuing it would be a blatantly bad idea. Please let me know if LearningExpress is working as intended and your thoughts/opinions on the matter!"

Hello,

Thanks for all the feedback so far. Below is an image of what the registration screen on LearningExpress should ideally look like, (note that the institution is DEED):

On WinWay being replaced: I am seeing that replacing WinWay might be an un-needed disruption in our service to customers. I would love to hear more about why this might be in order to convey these messages to leadership to emphasize the need to continue using WinWay if you feel this is the best course of action.

On Cybrarian in general- Cybrarian is meant to do 2 core things for DEED: continue to generate data in the same manner as CRS that we use for federal reporting purposes; continue to lock our computers so that customers cannot adversely affect our machines or network. CRS needed to be replaced because of its aging infrastructure and Cybrarian was determined to be the best fit for our needs to do so. We are still working out the particulars of implementing Cybrarian, and hope to begin inviting people to test it at either pilot locations or in St. Paul soon. I will reach out to Lisa when we are ready, (within the month, most likely), to convey the message to everyone that we need volunteers for testing. Some very good news- we have time to make Cybrarian a product that we are fully confident in before we push it out to WFC's. Thanks and please feel free to email me directly with any questions or concerns, (sean....@state.mn.us).

I’m impressed with the LearningExpress Library site and definitely feel it’s time to try something new and migrate away the 1992-2008 WinWay.

Although WinWay has some nice features, it’s hard to manipulate. It’s dated – samples don’t show email addresses and “References Available Upon Request” can’t be deleted.

I recommend change. I also like the other options, including sample tests for those preparing to take entrance or civil service exams.

Easy registration, too. Thanks for the quick access to the registration link so we could explore!

WinWay does allow you to add and remove Headings like References Available Upon Request. I get that if the version is 2008 things change though.

I just gave the resume in Learning Express a try. I entered the experience in chronological order, where I was assuming would be top. It added them in reverse order so my oldest is on top and I haven’t figured out how to change the order. It does provide a variety of formatting. It doesn’t pre-populate the job details like WinWay so a person can just edit vs. composing or copy/pasting.

Lisa,

Many of the customers coming into the resource room, lack the basic computer skills.  The WinWay resume program gives them a chance to build a basic resume quickly, if they need one that same day.  I have received many compliments from the customers advising me, that when using this program, they felt much more confident when creating their resume.
