Hi!
I’m writing from the St. Cloud WFC to ask about materials used in workshops, labs, or groups focused on completing employment applications. Time spent in our Lobby and Resource Room tells us that we have customers who are constantly looking up employment history on their phones, leaving an exorbitant amount of application fields blank, and of course struggling with online applications in general.
Before rolling out an application preparation lab, our manager asked that we find out which other WFCs are offering similar workshops and what is being taught in them. A statewide search of the Workshops and Training at all WorkForce Centers page, turned up just one such title: Employment Applications offered by the Minnesota WorkForce Center - Thief River Falls in Crookston.
I appreciate any information you can provide; PowerPoint presentations, handouts, exercises
Thank you in advance!

Thank you Julie and Sarah for sharing materials. The PowerPoint provides practical tips when applying for jobs and the Personal Record resource is a must have reference document.
Marney, hopefully others will share their training materials and resources. Some of the challenges you state are helping customers understand the importance of completing an application and accessing their past employment info. Those are two distinct outcomes where you can build your lab around. The Personal Record document is a perfect job aid too. If you need assistance, let me know or ask those questions on RRAF. Would be great for staff to collaborate on this project.
More background: We used to hand out the Personal Data Record cardstock pamphlets, but have not printed them in mass. Staff proposed a 2-hour lab to assist several customers in completing at least one application. After learning that soon we’ll lose half of the Resource Room computers and the REA laptops, we amended the lab activity to specifically filling out one handwritten paper application or personal data record during the lab. The most common hurdles are ELL customers who need assistance with translation, customers with low reading levels, those who struggle with organization, and those who undervalue the application’s importance. We’ve been asked for an outline of objectives and a strategy sheet to ensure we are teaching self-sufficiency skills instead of merely hand-holding.
So, yes we plan to use the Personal Data Record for those who arrive without a paper application. And, thank you Sarah, we can have a PowerPoint presentation or smaller handout (possibly translated into Somali and Spanish!) to take away. Hopefully at the very least, we can impress upon customers the importance of hanging onto the documents for future use!
Thank you Julie and Sarah for your help!
