Do any of you have a list of books and/or materials that you keep in your Resource Room? We need to update the books we have available to job seekers here at the Mankato WFC and were wondering if anyone has suggestions of good books to buy.

Good questions – I ‘d like to know what other WFC offer.

Our books are not used very often – rarely in fact, and we do not have funds to purchase any newer items. Most job seekers rely upon career sites/blogs, and our classes. I use the DEED library, and my own favorite books, and periodicals for class research.

We haven't ordered any new printed materials since I started here 5 years ago. The ones we do have are rarely looked at anymore since so much information is readily available online.

The books we have available hear in the Duluth WFC are also dated. What I found what works best for me is to keep an assortment of resume templets on my desk top. I discuss  the client needs with him or her and then present them with options that they can work with on the  computers and then email to themselves, if they don’t have a flash drive. I have generally had a good response doing this.

Good to get a general consensus of what other WFCs are or are not doing and seeing. I suspected that the books were being replaced with online resources.

That's correct, we stopped supplying books from the central office several years ago when the Internet became everyone's primary source for job search material. Local office management can purchase books if they want to; we just don't do it on a state-wide basis anymore.

We find that our customers are very diverse in age, talents, background and goals.
A few prefer written materials and won't touch a computer.

Our books aren't heavily used, but counselors and jobseekers have ready access to them.
The current version of the Creative Job Search book is helpful.

*(Is it okay to discard severely outdated state books?)

Our local newspaper is popular.

We have a spinner with tips on resumes, cover letters, thank yous, the DEED "Employment Resource Guide to State and Federal Agencies"; Ex-offender information and other job-seeker helps and local websites and staffing agencies.
On the wall we have current Adult Basic Education, GED, Veteran, bus, United Way, free clinic, legal aid, identity theft, local maps and job search handouts and job postings.
