Hi,

I am running into an issue trying to do an RRv9 daemon (systemd) server install on Linux (CentOS 7.9)

Here is the automated installation process that I am using. I have also disabled SELinux.
  1. serviceUser="rrService"
  2. useradd $serviceUser
  3. rrSetup_linux -console -rrRoot /rr
  4. rrWorkstation_installer -serviceServer -allowShutdown -rrUser $serviceUser
  5. rrAutostartservice -install
The rrAutostartservice systemd service unit is created but it fails to start successfully and create the rrServer config files.

[root@lnxscheduler lx64]# sestatus
SELinux status:                 disabled

[root@lnxscheduler lx64]# systemctl start rrAutostartservice.service

[root@lnxscheduler lx64]# systemctl status rrAutostartservice.service

Hi

Do NOT execute this:
>5.         rrAutostartservice -install

That installs the daemon with the .exe file being in that location. But the daemon executable should be on the local drive.

And it requires a .cfg file with the settings.
Otherwise it cannot start.

rrAutostartservice -install is not mentioned in any RR help file and is never required to execute.

The last step is this:

>4. rrWorkstation_installer -serviceServer -allowShutdown -rrUser $serviceUser

This

  • copies the service to local drive /usr/local/RoyalRender
  • Creates the .cfg file
  • calls -install on the deamon executable
  • Windows: Creates an autostart-link to rrServerWatch for the user on desktop login

PS: After the installation, any error of the service will be written to the rrAutostartservice_error.log right beside the deamon executable in /usr/local/RoyalRender/

regards,
Holger Schönberger

Hi Holger,

I removed the explicit "rrAutostartservice -install" step. However, now the service does not get installed. In fact, no /usr/local/RoyalRender directory is created at all.

Here is the console output from step 4. rrWorkstation_installer -serviceServer -allowShutdown -rrUser $serviceUser

Hi

The setup steps are usually:

  1. Start server, one client and submitter applications without service to test that everything is working.
  2. Then install server and all clients as service/daemon.

Please start
/RoyalRender/bin/lx64/rrServerconsole once.

Once started, you can close it with CTRL-C.

PS:

I will log a ticket for the developers that you can install the server service without starting the server first.

FYI: It is implemented into the next update.

Hi Holger,

I just now gave v9.0.02 an automated deployment spin. The rrAutostartservice (rrServer) systemd service installation flow works now to create the config files and start the service.

However, I am getting the following error as well.

Feb 04. 11:55.18 [ 9.0.02 |os00:07.33|rr00:00.00] file contents:  8FBDFE69-B4A0-40F9-99BA-2BCD2A80A396

Hi

The error can be ignored.

It is not essential/required for the current server version.

The folder should be created once the rrServer is started once via the daemon (~30 sec after the daemon was started).

But I will log a ticket to investigate the issue and remove the error message.

Hi Holger,

With the rrAutostartservice for rrServer running, shouldn't the rrServer config files in /RoyalRender/sub/cfg_global be auto created?

With RR v9.0.02, rrWorkstation_installer creates the systemd service and starts it successfully, but the rrServer config files are not created.

Here is the output from rrWorkstation_installer -serviceServer -rrUser rrService

Hi

The rrAutostartservice is responsible for starting and watching over other apps only.

It waits ~30 seconds before it starts the other application (Because it should be started after all other apps during boot).

In this case it should start the rrServerconsole after 30 seconds.
And the rrServerconsole creates the config files.

If the rrAutostartservice is not able to start the rrServerconsole,

then it writes an error message into the file /usr/local/RoyalRender/rrAutostartservice_error.log (and the Linux OS log).

Much more than 30 seconds have passed and the rrServerconsole config files have not been created.

Hi

The error does not state anything about an issue starting the rrServer.

And that message about the server.so file can be ignored.

Please edit the file /usr/local/RoyalRender/rrAutostartservice.cfg

And change
writeLogFile= 0

to

writeLogFile= 1

It create a file rrAutostartservice.log which states progress messages of the service.

Hi

Does the .cfg file state a line with the rrServerconsole?
(„executable in this coded setting is /mnt/…“)

Was the service running for more than 30 seconds?
As the service waits some time.

Perhaps we should do a remote session to check all settings?

Yes, the rrAutostartservice service has been running for much more than 30 seconds.

The .cfg file was auto generated when the rrWorkstation_installer -serviceServer -rrUser rrService command was run.

However, it does not have any reference to rrServerconsole inside of it. Here are the complete file contents.

Hi Holger,

I tried the updated service installer and it is now generating the .cfg file with the rrServerconsole executable reference. Thanks for that update.

However, I am now getting a different error message (loopOS: Child closed with error code 100) and no /RoyalRender/sub/cfg_global/ config files generated.

Ok, it started.

Error code 100 means the config initialization failed.
The app log file of the server should contain an error message now.

The app log directory is empty.

[root@LnxScheduler log]# pwd
/RoyalRender/sub/log
[root@LnxScheduler log]# ls -l

Hi

Ok, it seems there are some more issues to the approach not running the server first.

I think the best would be to go back and start the rrServer first until the new approach was properly tested by our devs.

1.            serviceUser="rrService"

2.            useradd $serviceUser

3.            rrSetup_linux -console -rrRoot /rr

4.  rrServerconsole -initAndClose

4.            rrWorkstation_installer -serviceServer -allowShutdown -rrUser $serviceUser

regards,
Holger Schönberger
