Good morning,

I am not sure, if I am missing something, but is it possible to have an ACES view transform option in the rrViewer so the rendered images are displayed correctly there? Thanks in advance.

Hi

Yes, this is possible.

The ACES settings have to be part of the job as each render app (3D, Comp) or project might have different settings.

Then the rrViewer and the preview images in rrControl have OCIO applied.

We have implemented OCIO in most of our submission plugins.

Which render app do you use?

Do you use our submission plugin?

Hey, thanks for the reply!

Then its strange why it wouldnt work. We are using Cinema 4D 2025 with the newest redshift version, so color management is fully done by c4d. Also using the c4d submission plugin. Images look very washed out in the rrViewer as if the wrong view transform is being applied.

Oh realy?

Does it work with Redshift and Maya?
It seams that the previews are not displayed correctly in the rrViewer ... (.exr Files)

best regards,
Chris

I cannot test it with maya, but yeah we are also rendering 32-bit .exr files with ACEScg color space, just seems like rrViewer does not interpret it correctly or does not apply the correct srgb view transform.

Hi

As a first step, please verify that OCIO is read correctly from your scene.

Either in rrSubmitter:

Or rrControl:

If you do not get OCIO settings, please state RR version and submission plugin version:

If the OCIO settings are submitted with the job, then take a look at the render log if there is an issue with OCIO:
(it might report that the config file is not found)

The preview images in rrControl and images in rrViewer show “OCIO” if it was applied:

Good morning,

thanks for the detailed explanation. As you can see from the screenshots it seems that OCIO is being read correctly throughout the submission, rendering etc. but then rrViewer does not apply OCIO. It seems that we are still on version 9.1.14, did this get fixed in newer versions by chance?

Hi

According to our fixes list, 9.1.14 was the last version with a fix for OCIO in C4D.

I have tested some settings and I have found a bug.

Please verify that “Linear Color” is NOT enabled in the rrJob settings.

Then open the rrViewer via the “View” button again.

Does it show a yellow OCIO now?

Hey

when I submit the job without "linear color" checked, it just does what it is supposed to, it doesnt show the image with linear color. But no OCIO in sight still unfortunately.

Hi

I will add some log messages to the rrClient and rrViewer about the OCIO conversion to find out why it does not work on your side.

If you open the rrViewer, do you get at least the yellow “C” in the corner?

Thanks for looking into this! No "C" in rrViewer as well...

Hi

just as a follow up, not sure if it helps with troubleshooting, but the preview function in rrControl seems to apply OCIO correctly, double clicking a preview image also shows OCIO as seen in the screenshot

Hi

Thanks for confirming.

Then the case is reduced to two issues.

  1. The rrClient is able to use OCIO.
But the rrClient does not create rrViewer cache files (the small ’C’ is missing).
By default RR should create the cache files for all 3D and archive render:

  2. The rrViewer cannot use OCIO.
In the case of C4D, the path to the OCIO file is using a variable to the C4D app path.
You can see the variable path in rrControl.
The rrClient resolves the path as you can see in the render log.
The rrViewer does not have the app list of the rrClient and does not convert it.

FYI:

The new RR version is about to tested today and I can send you the version.

If you enable a debug mode for jobs, then it will print all OCIO infos into the app logs.

And it will convert half of the image only, this way you can directly see if there was some conversion.

Hi

The update is ready:

www.RoyalRender.de/download/support/RoyalRender__9.1.17a__updateFrom_9.1.14+.zip

Please note that while the rrViewer should now be able to use Cinemas OCIO config,

the more important issue is that the small “C” is missing in rrViewer for your render.
As the rrViewer is able to load a whole sequence in 2 seconds instead of 2 minutes with that feature.
And OCIO is applied in the table/player even if your machine has no C4D installed.

  • Please submit a job with the “Send Disabled” option enabled (rrSubmitter right column)
  • Then select the job in rrControl and
execute menu Debug / “rrServer+Client Log: Detailed information about job processing”.
  • Select “job {myID}” and submit the command.
  • Enable the job

  • Wait for the job to finish

  • Select the job in rrControl and
execute "Export debug info - selected job(s)" via the menu "Debug".
  • Please upload the file via www.RoyalRender.de/upload_r.php .

Changes:

  • rrClient reports if or why not it created rrViewer cache files (Most important issue)
  • rrClient/rrViewer report if there is an issue with the OCIO conversion
  • All images (preview created by client, rrCache files created by client, images loaded by rrViewer) have an imprint if OCIO or gamma correction was applied.
  • All color corrections are applied to the upper part of the image only (That you can directly see the change)
  • rrViewer tries to find render apps on your local machine.

Hi Holger,

can confirm this issue has been fixed now, OCIO working flawlessly in the rrViewer. Thank you!

Do you get the small yellow C in the corner of the thumbnails in rrViewer?
