Hi,

I am having some trouble getting Eevee and Arnold setup for our renderfarm.

Eevee :
Cycles for blenders works as expected on the machines, I have setup blender locally and farm wide for all machines and the server. All machines are using blender 2.93.4 LTS and have the latest version of RR installed, 8.3.0 as well as all the proper plugins. When sending an eevee enabled file, the submitter recognizes the proper engine and version as expected, however when rendering begins all machine clients crash permanently, i will also add a log file for proper diagnosis.

Arnold :
Maya was recently updated for 2022 and doing a few tests with it have shown that arnold works on most but not all machines for some reason. And again the render app is installed locally and farm wide for various uses. RRControl gives an odd error log that shows its looking for the render app folder but cant or doesnt find anything oddly enough, but all the paths are the same per machine.

Hi

Eevee:

Eevee is an openGL renderer. And due to some driver issues/restrictions, openGL does not work within a background service.

(Cycles uses CUDA, Nvidia has fixed it within a background service)

There are some older Quadro card that do not have the issue, but it might just be the older driver.

Please see the Windows section on this page:

http://www.royalrender.de/help/GPUrender.html

Side-Note: We have informed the Blender dev team about the crash months ago and asked at least for an error message instead of just crashing.

But so far it did not had any priority for them.

Arnold :

Issue:

„No right version of render application“:
This is related to the main render application that you start.

In your case Maya.

If looks like there was an issue with the installation of Maya 2020.

It is located in dublicated folder:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2020\Maya2020\

And not located in (as it should be)

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2020\

The rrClient replaces the versions in the path with the new version.

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2020\Maya2020\

becomes

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2022\Maya2022\

And as 2022 is probably installed right, the wrong path is not found.

Solution:

If you want to use both Maya versions, then you have to add another Maya install path to the client configs.

Are all Maya Clients setup the same (same render apps, not only Maya)?

If they are:

Please open rrConfig, tab Per Client Config.

Select the Maya clients, open sub-tab Render Apps.

Press the top button „Change Render Apps“

Press add Render App, Choose Maya.

Abort the file browser dialog if there is one.

Copy the Maya 2020 path and paste it into the new emtpy Maya line.

Edit the 2020 into 2022 and remove the dublicated folder.

Verify that the version in the next column is 2022.

regards,
Holger Schönberger

You've explained the eevee issues before so I do apologize for having you repeat it. Only reason I asked again was simply because it was working with our old machines, but I presume when we updated pc components that was subsequently affected.

In regards to maya, I noticed the incorrect file path on specific machines and corrected it prior to emailing support initally, however, when submitting a project the log was more or less the same but did not have the final line of "found installation path" or whatever it was. I'll see if adding to the render config for multiple versions will remedy the case.

It is strange to me that Arnold works on most machines and then once the file paths were corrected, and client restarted, that the error wasn't remedied. But, I will try your solution, thankyou!

Hi

>when we updated pc components

Perhaps you had old drivers installed (2 years+)

Just had a thought:  I do not know if AMD GPUs have that issue.

(Have to check that for the film academy as well, they had the same issue.

Perhaps they should buy 2-3 AMD cards for the few/fast Eevee renderings)

> then once the file paths were corrected, and client restarted, that the error wasn't remedied

You have used rrConfig to edit the file, right?

And not a text editor.

(This would require a rrServer shutdown as it caches the client config file.)

We use primarily Nvidia for our systems, we upgraded from Quadro P4000's to RTX 4000's, I would prefer to use gaming cards as in some cases they perform better and serve the dual purpose of rendering and gaming. But instead the school keeps the machines solely workstation focused.

When the file path was changed, it was local to the machine and not updated in RRconfig at all, so that could definitely be a reason for why it was not working to begin with.

Doing tests with Arnold now it is working as expected and everything is working fine. Thankfully I haven't had to contact support much with the plethora of errors I've run into, but I greatly appreciate the bit of help with the last few errors I was scratching my head with!

Hi

>I would prefer to use gaming cards as in some cases they perform better

Yes, the Film Academy BW uses gaming cards as well.

But I will still try if AMD gaming cards have that issue as well.

And if does not have that issue, a few (secondary) cards for pure render farm machines should allow Students to continue using Eevee.

Otherwise they have to use Cycles only.

The other solution is to have a few render farm only machines that are always logged in with the renderfarm user.
