I have seen a lot about the software and Pi camera,  but very little about which lens type and how to focus it. I have an old 8mm projector and an old 8mm repair machine. I have read several posts and blogs about how others have done this, but not much is said about how to mount and where to mount the lens. And physical lighting seems it would be important - not the software end.  I need to replace the bulb in bot machines because they are bad (one gives off yellow light) what and where is the best location.

So do I need close up lens? Or something else?
Can I just use the camera without a lens? or maybe just a pinhole lens?
Should I put the camera and lens where the old lens is (on the projector) or should I put the light in front of the old lens and the camera and lens where the old light is?
(I am leaning twards using the old projector).

What works best for others? Not much seems to be said about these things!
I am more of a SW guy, so that doesn't worry me as much. What I need is ideas about
where to start with the physical lens/camera/light hardware placement. AND what kind of lens.

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

If you choose a Pi Camera HQ it has a CS mount, for the lens you can choose:

- A CCTV lens with CS mount
- A camera lens, canon, nikon, ...
- A lens of enlarger example Schneider Componon
- Solutions with a close-up lens like for example in addition to the V2 camera lens are complicated to calculate and will not give a very good optical quality.

For the calculation of the distances, as a first approximation the magnification S8/Sensor is 1, so distance film/lens = distance lens/sensor = 2 times the focal length of the lens,

In my project I use a Schneider Compon S50 with a 50mm focal length see

Here the camera is in the place of the lamp but it is also possible to put it in front of the projector, it depends on the available space.

You can find more information in my project yart on github and Google groups.
