Hi, I've been following the development of this editor for awhile, but
with the current state of the documentation, there's one thing I have
to ask (and I hope someone can answer):

If I wanted to make a character or item list with this database,
complete with the name and stats of the characters or name and
properties of the items or spells or whatever, which of the following
methods, if either, would be appropriate?

1. name of the database itself being the name of the category (such
as 'item'), with the rest of the items arranged like a vertical list
or table. (sorta like a dictionary in python, I guess)

2. name of the database being the name of an individual character or
item, with the rest being properties thereof?

It's the first, right? @_@;

The first option is the one you want.  The database name is the primary category for your data list, each entry is just that another entry in your list and the elements are properties for the entries in the list.

For example it is intended to work as follows:

Items > Small Sword > Cost

(Database Name, Entry, Element)
