Greetings.

Was reading some random blogs and came across Gamers & Grodnards about the death of Ray Harryhausen and a suggestion that there be a blogfest on Friday to honor the man.

Seeing how I almost missed this and because I thought it was a wonderful idea, I thought I would post this to the list in case anyone had some good blog idea that they could do in this regard.

So happy blogging.

You know... it makes me wonder ... is there any connection at all between Harryhausen's work and the miniatures we use in gaming?  I almost have to suspect that there is.  Anyone happen to know?

I would not be surprised at some level. That would make a good topic for a blog post if anyone knew.

Miniature wargaming is old.  Chess precursors are arguably its forerunner. Became popular in modern form ~100 years ago thanks to H.G. Wells http://theminiaturespage.com/ref/minigide.html#history

It's more likely that they inspired Harryhausen.

There were wargames before Gygax. Minatures gaming with scale ships took place preWWII in the homes of some of the founding fathers of SF like L Sprague de Camp. They invented many of the concepts apon which subsequent wargames were based, which eventually evolved into Chainmail (amongst many others) which then became the foundation for D&D.
