Kalidasa was a Classical Sanskrit writer, widely regarded as the greatest poet and dramatist in Sanskrit. He wrote three plays and four poems. His writings are primarily based on the Vedas, the Mahabharata and the Puranas.

Kalidasa’s works are standard bearers of the beauty and vitality of Sanskrit, its elegance and its sophistication. It is impossible for any translation to convey perfectly the grandeur and the flow of Kalidasa’s writings. Having said that, the translation by Pt Ramtej Shastri is very good.
