Illustrated Shvetambara Jain Agamas
http://www.navelgazing.net/2014/08/illustrated-shvetambara-jain-agamas.html
The Agamas are the most ancient and venerated Jain texts, based on the discourses of the omniscient Jinas.
They were transmitted orally for generations, but towards the 3rd or 4th century BCE, they were redacted. Agamas in the present form were written down after several synods were held in Gujarat and Bihar. They are believed to be the culmination of the teachings of the Jinas and hence held in great reverence by Jains. One cannot become a scholar of Jain studies without a thorough study of the Jain Agamas, both Digambara and Shvetambara recensions.
The Agamas are for Jains what the Vedas are for the Hindus. The term ‘agama’ is common to both Hindu and Jain traditions. It denotes the ‘arrival’ of knowledge carried by an authoritative lineage of preceptors.
The Agamas themselves have twelve limbs, known as the Angas. They are as under:
1. आचारांग सूत्र Acaranga Sutra {Manual on Ideal Ascetic Conduct}
This describes the conduct prescribed for Jain ascetics.
2. सूत्रकृतांग सूत्र Sutrakritanga Sutra {Manual on Heretical Views}
This describes the methods of revering knowledge, discriminating between true knowledge and heretical views, and regular religious activities.
3. स्थानांग सूत्र Sthananga Sutra {Manual on Possibilities}
This describes the six Dravyas in detail.
4. समवायांग सूत्र Samavayanga Sutra {Manual on Combinations}
This describes the six Dravyas in relation to one another from the perspective of Karananuyoga.
5. व्याख्याप्रज्ञप्ति सूत्र (भगवती सूत्र) Vyakhya Prajnapti Sutra {Manual of Detailed Explanations}
This answers sixty thousand questions raised by the Ganadharas.
6. ज्ञाताधर्मकथांग सूत्र Jnata Dharmakathanga Sutra {Manual of Stories on Virtue and Valour}
This has life sketches of the Tirthankaras and the Ganadharas.
7. उपासकाध्ययन सूत्र Upasakadhyayana Sutra {Manual on Ideal Lay Conduct}
This describes the ideal conduct of a lay Jain.
8. अन्तकृद्दशा सूत्र Antakriddasha Sutra {Manual on Ten Endmakers}
This describes the life stories of ten monks who braved terrible adversities or Upasargas, and remain unflinchingly engrossed in their meditation and attained Moksa.
9. अनुत्तरौपपातिक सूत्र Anuttaraupapatikadasha Sutra {Manual on Ten Arisers in the Highest Heavens}
This describes the life stories of ten monks who braved terrible adversities or Upasargas, and remain unflinchingly engrossed in their meditation and attained rebirth in the heavens known as the five Anuttara Vimanas.
10. प्रश्नव्याकरण सूत्र Prashna Vyakarana Sutra {Manual on Questions and Explanations}
This describes various phenomena and their auspiciousness; answers various questions based on multiple viewpoints through inductive and deductive reasoning.
11. विपाक सूत्र Vipaka Sutra {Manual on Fruition of Deeds}
This describes the result of merits and demerits.
12. दृष्टिवाद सूत्र Drishtivada Sutra {Manual on Disputation of Views}
This decries the 363 false philosophies in existence at the time of Bhagavan Mahavira, and establishes Jainism as the ultimate, complete and totally credible philosophy. It answers all the questions that may arise in a lucid manner.
Interestingly, of these twelve Agamas, the Shvetambaras believe that only the first eleven exist, and the twelfth one has been lost forever. And the Digambaras believe that of the twelve Agamas, only sections of the twelfth remain, the first eleven Agamas have been lost!
Setting aside sectarian differences, the Agamas are historically, philosophically and philologically relevant documents of the ancient history and culture of the Jains and they convey aptly the richness and sophistication of the Tirthankaras’ teachings. They also carry important archival information on life and times in ancient India. Hence, they are a rich source of information and study material for the student of South Asian Studies and Religious Studies.
There are several editions of the Jain Agamas, published in various corners of India. This particular edition is known for its lucidity and attractiveness.
