Urdu is a language of India. It was born in India, and has hugely influenced, and in turn been influenced by Hindi. Urdu follows the grammatical rules of Hindi, and it vocabulary relies on Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Hindi, Sanskrit and Avadhi. The Urdu script is known as the Nastaliq, and is based on the Persian script.
In the 20th century, there have been several dictionaries made on Indian languages. The first Urdu - Hindi dictionary was made by Acarya Ramachandra Varma, at the request of Pandit Nathuram Premi, both great scholars of Hindi, Sanskrit, Apabhramsa and Urdu. It was published by Hindi Granth Ratnakar Karyalay. It was the first attempt of its kind, very well researched, and boasted of impeccable proof-reading. This edition has been further updated every decade, and the present edition has been revised, edited and updated by Dr Badarinath Kapoor, a leading linguist & academician.
