Urdu is a language of India. It was born in India, and has hugely influenced, and in turn been influenced by Hindi. Both Hindi and Urdu are daughters of Khadi Boli. Urdu follows the syntax of Hindi, uses Hindi verbs, and the lexicon of Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Sanskrit, Apabhramsha, Khadi Boli, Avadhi and Braj.

Urdu written in the elegant Nastaliq script. It is based on the Persian script.

In the 20th century, there have been several dictionaries based on Indian languages. The first Urdu - Hindi dictionary was prepared by Acharya Ramachandra Varma, at the request of Pandit Nathuram Premi, both great scholars of Hindi, Sanskrit, Apabhramsa and Urdu. It was published by Hindi Granth Ratnakar Karyalay. It was the first attempt of its kind. It was very well researched and boasted of impeccable proof-reading. This edition has been further updated every decade, and the present edition has been revised, edited and updated by Dr Badrinath Kapoor, a leading linguist and lexicographer of India.
