About the Kuvalayamala
The Kuvalaya Mala is a Jain novel, composed in the 8th century, CE. It is the remarkable tale of Prince Kuvalayacandra and the pact of five souls who seek liberation. It is an intricately crafted narrative, blurring the lines between prose and poetry. There are several verse passages juxtaposed within the poetry, each adding to the richness and depth of the narrative.
Besides being the earliest example of a Campu in Indian literature, the Kuvalayamala is an extraordinarily beautiful work, deserving the attention of readers worldwide on its own merit.
It is an exquisite gem in the garland of Indian literature.
The Plot
The Kuvalayamala tells a riveting tale of human choices, marked by love and desire, laughter and tears, joy and sorrow, and ending in deliverance. Like several works of that era, it starts with worldly wanderings of the key protagonists, and draws to a close with their liberation. In essence, it is the story of Prince Kuvalayacandra’s quest for the love of Kuvalayamala. Embedded within this tale is the story of five protagonists, who take religious vows of asceticism, in order to conquer desire and put a halt to their worldly wanderings.
This edition has an extraordinarily detailed introduction, and separate glossaries of Prakrit terms and religious terms.
This book is part of a series of excellent books being published to commemorate the Mahamastakabhisheka of Lord Gommateshvara Bahubali, currently going on at Shravana Belagola in Karnataka.
We are proud to make this book available at our bookstore and through mail order. We ship books within India and internationally.
