India has had a grand tradition of Sanskrit works on acting, starting with the eponymous Bharat Muni's ‘Natya Shastra’. But in the West, Constantin Stanislavsky was the first one to do so. His three legendary works, ‘An Actor Prepares’, ‘Building A Character’ & ‘Creating A Role’ enjoy unrivalled status as the standard works on acting and theatre in the West. His school of method acting was popularised by some of the greatest Hollywood Stars.
His books have, for the first time, been translated into Hindi. We are proud to sell them.
Who was Konstantin Stanislavsky?
Konstantin Sergeyevich Alexeyev Stanislavsky (1863 – 1938) was a Russian actor and theatre director who formulated and established the Stanislavsky system of acting. Konstantin Alexeyev came from a very moneyed family which belonged to the upper crust of Russian social hierarchy. Tsarist Russia was a deeply feudal society where acting was still seen as the job of serfs employed for this purpose by a nobleman, Konstantin’s family frowned upon his deep and abiding interesting in acting. He therefore used the pseudonym of ‘Stanislavsky’ to ensure his parents were unaware of his efforts in this direction.
Konstantin Stanislavsky treated acting and theatre as a serious endeavour requiring dedication, discipline and integrity. Throughout his life, he subjected his own acting to a process of rigorous artistic self-analysis and reflection. His development of a theorised praxis—in which practice is used as a mode of inquiry and theory as a catalyst for creative development—identifies him as one of the great modern theatre practitioners.
Stanislavsky relied on a wide range of influences and ideas, including his study of the modernist and avant-garde developments of his time (naturalism, symbolism and Meyerhold's constructivism), Russian formalism, Yoga, Pavlovian behavioural psychology, James-Lange psychophysiology and the aesthetics of Pushkin, Gogol and Tolstoy. He described his approach as 'Spiritual Realism'. Stanislavsky wrote several works, including ‘An Actor Prepares’, ‘An Actor's Work on a Role’, and his autobiography, ‘My Life in Art’.
Stanislavsky's ideas were adapted by teachers such as Stella Adler, Robert Lewis, Sanford Meisner and Lee Strasberg for American actors. Strasberg's teaching emphasised the practise of connecting to a character by drawing on personal emotions and memories, aided by a set of exercises and practices including sense memory and affective memory. Stanislavsky's system of acting was the foundation of Strasberg's technique. Rigorous adherents of Lee Strasberg's technique are now commonly referred to as "method actors".
Method acting has been described as having "revolutionised American theatre". While classical acting instruction "had focused on developing external talents", the method was "the first systematised training that also developed internal abilities (sensory, psychological, emotional)".
Many of the most illustrious names in Hollywood took great pride in practising method acting. Amongst them are:
Marlon Brando
James Dean
Paul Newman
Robert De Niro
Jack Nicholson

Steve McQueen
Warren Beatty
