Over a century ago, Pandit Jugalkishore Mukhtar meticulously compiled a dictionary of Prakrit Gāthās found in Jain texts, titled PRAKRIT VĀKYA SŪCĪ. This present collection continues that distinguished scholarly tradition, bringing together citations in both Prakrit and Sanskrit, drawn from Śvetāmbara and Digambara commentarial literature. It stands as a work of exceptional quality, depth, and reliability.

The quotations cited by Jain authors, commentators, and scholiasts (scholars who interpret and elucidate texts) in ancient, mediaeval, and premodern times offer profound insights into the ecumenical spirit of their respective eras. Indeed, Ancient India was a golden age of inter-religious dialogue—an intellectual landscape where diverse viewpoints were welcomed, respected, and critically examined with remarkable openness.

These citations serve not only as philological evidence but also as invaluable historical documentation of the evolution of Jain philosophical thought and its seminal contributions to the broader religious discourse in India. Through engagement with these texts, readers are invited to connect with the rich heritage of Jain literature and philosophy, deepening their appreciation of its enduring historical and intellectual legacy.

The exegetical richness contained in this compendium constitutes a veritable treasure trove for scholars and enthusiasts alike. It opens a window onto the erudite world of classical Indian scholarship, inspiring further study, dialogue, and contemplation.

The structure of this dictionary is particularly noteworthy: the citations are organised both chronologically and alphabetically, offering a distinctive and evolving perspective on Jain intellectual history across the centuries. This dual arrangement enables readers to trace the development of Jain thought alongside its interactions with other philosophical traditions, thereby providing a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the evolution of Jain philosophy.

Volume 1 spans the 4th to 9th centuries CE.

Volume 2 covers the 10th to 12th centuries CE.

Volume 3 includes materials from the 13th century CE onward.
