Jain Cosmology has a unique perception of the Universe. It perceives different solar and lunar entities in a manner that is hitherto unparalleled in other religions and cultures. It were almost as if the Jains could look down on earth from an immense height and enjoyed a multi-planar vision of the universe.

Jain Cosmology is an innately fascinating topic. There are very few Jain works dedicated to this subject. All Jain traditions together have composed less than 15 independent texts on this subject.

Even Western Jinologists have not done a great deal of work on Jain Cosmology. One can recall Prof Collette Caillat's eponymous 'Jain Cosmology' and Prof Frank Van Den Bossche's 'Jain Geography' but struggles to find a third work carried out on Jain Cosmology by a Western scholar.

Subject

Yativṛṣabha's TILOYAPAṆṆATTI is an ancient Jain text on karaṇānuyoga (gaitānuyoga). It gives mathematical descriptions of Jain cosmology and is invaluable for the study of Indian cosmography. This work is said to be the source of many later works such as the 'Rājavārtika', 'Harivaṃśa Purāṇa', 'Triloka Sāra', 'Jambudvīpa Prajñapti' and 'Siddhāntasāra Dīpaka'.

The Tiloya Paṇṇatti is a Prakrit work in the Jain Shauraseni dialect and has been composed primarily in the āryā metre. The work has a total of 5677 verses divided into 9 chapters. The chapter scheme is as under:

1. Loka :: The Entire Universe

286 verses

2. Naraka Loka :: The World of Hells

371 verses

3. Bhavanavāsī Loka :: The World of Mansion-dwelling Demigods

254 verses

4. Manuṣya Loka :: The World of Humans

3006 verses

5. Tiryañca Loka :: The World of Sub-human species - plants, animals, insects, etc.

323 verses

6. Vyantara Loka :: The World of Peripatetic Demigods

103 verses

7. Jyotiṣī Loka :: The World of Light

624 verses

8. Kalpavāsī Loka :: The World of the Heaven-dwellers

727 verses

9. Siddha Loka :: The World of Liberated Beings

47 verses

Authorship

Ācārya Yativṛṣabha is known for his important commentary on the Kasāyapāhuḍa, {Treatise on Passions}, which is dated in the early centuries of the Common Era. Hence it is speculated that Ācārya Yativṛṣabha belonged to 4th - 5th century CE.

Also, there are at least five references to Ācārya Sarvanandī’s Loka Vibhāga (Prakrit) in the TILOYAPAṆṆATTI. And the Prakrit Loka Vibhāga has been reliably dated as having been composed in the middle of the 5th century CE.

The text and its place in history

This is a very important and ancient Jain work on Jain Cosmology and has been critically edited by the scholarly team of Prof. Dr. Hiralal Jain and Prof. Dr. A N Upadhye, two stalwart scholars who were chiefly responsible for the publication of the Ṣaṭkhaṇḍāgama along with the Dhavalā commentary, in the 1930s. The Hindi translation by Pt. Balchandra Shastri is excellent and follows the text closely.

Language and style

The Jain Shauraseni used in this work would seem to suggest that this work predates the Western recensions of the āgamas that took place in Valabhi in the 6th century CE. In addition to cosmology, this work sheds light on Jain dogmatics, culture, history, mythology and ascetic lineages. Of the 5677 gathas, most are in the āryā metre, but other metres such as śārdūlavikrīḍita, vasantatilakā, indravajra, dodhaka, svagata and mālinī have also been used. Apart from the verses, there are several long passages in prose.

This first ever translation in modern Hindi was carried out by Pt. Balchandra Shastra. It was out of print for many decades before being republished.

We are proud to distribute this excellent work, and congratulate the publishers for selling these beautifully printed and bound volumes at near-cost price.
