Anekant
a
vada is a fundamental principle of human nature, individually and corporately, and it is a glory of Jainism to have treasured and transmitted this wisdom for the enriching of mankind and the promotion of peace. I am a convert to anekantavada. I preach it in English as "pluralism," and John Stuart Mill taught it as people being right in what they affirm, but wrong in what they deny. It is characteristic of humanity that we all view absolute truth from different perspectives, and we have to communicate with intellectual humility in order to grasp the truth better, it often being the case that even when the whole world pools its knowledge and comes to consensus, we still haven't exhausted the full content of the truth. Our similarities make communication possible, and our differences make it necessary. Some things are right and wrong, and people can be stubborn in error, but although in very many things we may know the world is a sphere and the Sun a star, for instance, there are actually depths to both the Earth and the Sun that we still don't know.
