Help Bring New Allotments to Your Community

We’re excited to share an opportunity from our friends at Green Allotments, a charity dedicated to creating new, not-for-profit allotment sites across England.

You can ask Green Allotments to fund up to £50,000 per acre and help create a new allotment site in your area, with a strong focus on community-led management and environmental sustainability. If you’re passionate about allotments and want to see more growing spaces in your local area, this initiative could be perfect for you.

Who Can Apply?

  • Individuals aged 18 or over

  • Permanent residents in England

  • Passionate about allotments and willing to collaborate with Green Allotments to establish new sites

Please note, this opportunity is not open to councils or statutory organisations.

How to Get Involved

There’s no complicated application form—simply contact Green Allotments by your preferred method (email, phone, video message, etc.) to express your interest. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with no set deadline.

For more details and to get in touch, visit the Green Allotments website

Protect Your Patch

In the lead up to National Allotments Week, we are proud to be partnering with Take Five to Stop Fraud, a national campaign that offers advice on how to protect yourself from financial fraud.

As part of our partnership, you can order a free 'Protect Your Patch' pack – each containing a notepad, basil seeds, and a produce bag as reminders to STOP, CHALLENGE AND PROTECT. Numbers are limited, so don't miss out on the opportunity to order your free pack online now.

The Take Five Team (pictured above at our AGM last month!) will also be hosting webinars and attending get-togethers during National Allotments Week. Follow Take Five to Stop Fraud on Facebook and visit takefive-stopfraud.org.uk for more information.

Thank You

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in our survey—we had nearly 2,000 respondents! Your input is invaluable, and we’re excited to share the results during National Allotments Week. There were many interesting findings, but our favourite has to be that 96% of you would recommend having an allotment. That really says it all! Stay tuned for more insights soon.

The Guide to Carrots

Should you Remove  Weeds?

20 Perennial Vegetables

Warm greetings, I’m Jeff –  Interim President!

Short term, I stepped into the role in April 2024 because of or despite my connection to allotments going back many more years than any I might be able to look forward to.  Both grandparents had allotments, one in Tunbridge Wells and one in Letchworth. The allotment, which I first knew directly was almost at the end of the runway of Fairlop airfield, with Spitfires and Mustangs accompanying the potato harvest. I’ve rented an allotment on three sites in East London ever since. I started attending NAS Essex County Body meetings in the early noughties, and Colin Nickerson very kindly invited me to Eastern Region meetings in Cambridge as an ARI Mentor. I was elected Eastern Region Representative in 2013 and London Region Representative from 2017 to 2021. I very much appreciate the members who proposed that I receive Honorary Life Membership at the 2022 AGM, followed by Honorary Life Vice President in 2023.

Allotments have always been a big part of my life, and I very much appreciate and am proud to be part of a community as diverse as any that values growing, sharing, and supporting one another. There are so many people I have met on allotments in London and Eastern England whose stories and lives I would just have not known. I’m looking forward to the year ahead and everything we’ll achieve together, especially during National Allotments Week!

Best wishes,

  Jeff Barber- Interim President
