Parallel (spliced?) connection cable

Hi there,

I have just ordered a USB-serial connector (using FTDI FT232R chip). My car is a 1992 Range Rover with the onboard diagnostic display. Since that is already there plus the fact it is hard to get the Lucas TTS 5 way connector, I was thinking of hard wiring the USB cable in parallel with the onboard display by fitting the wires directly to the existing 5 way connector.

Would that work or does anybody sees an issue?
