Jeff,

One subject I am interested in hearing opinions on is websites to use to host my photos for others to see.  In the last year I have been booted from two different sites when they decide to reduce their 'free offerings.'  This time I have over 100 albums with more than 2000 pictures out there and now they're telling me as of June 25, no more.  It is terribly aggravating to spend the time it takes to upload those and then I have several different people linked to the various albums from tourism to family and at the drop of a hat they decide they're not going to do it anymore.....very upsetting.

So I need some feedback on a website that will provide me with a good outlet for my photos to be shared without a lot of strings attached for me or my visitors.

What do you think of that as a topic?

Thank you in advance,

Hi Everyone,

I know its been a while since we've typed in this group, but, it's
time to get things rolling again.  Like most small business people
we've had to "keep our noses to the grindstone" this past year to
simply keep our doors open; I'm sure everyone has the same type of
story to tell about these tough economic times we are experiencing.
None the less, life goes on, and all of us artist still need these
types of arenas to learn, vent, and share our knowledge and creative
efforts.

So, enough of that - let's start some new photo trash - something new
to discuss and learn about ... any ideas?

Jeff

Hi Mike,

Good to hear your still around and shooting. I'm not certain, but I
think www.Zenfolio.com offers a free hosting / display web site.
I use their premium service to sell prints online which has a yearly
subscription fee - but that's not your goal. There are many sites to
upload such as Flickr, but I think there might be some limitations.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Mike,

I have been pretty satisfied with Pbase. It is not free, but cost is quite low at $30 a year. But to me, paying a small cost is well worth it to not have a barrage of ads popping up all over the site. I can't remember what the storage limit is for the $30, but I have a ton of photos on there, (mostly just family snapshot stuff), and am no where near my limit. You can purchase more storage space if needed.

The real key to it all is properly sizing your photos before upload. I have a "downsize" action set up in Photoshop that almost instantly can downsize a folder of photos. I have it set to size the photos to 800 pixels on the long side at 72 DPI at a JPEG compression of 5. The photos will still look fine on the computer, but are of very low size which really stretches your storage space, not to mention prevents people from making a decent print if they steal the photo.

Of course the downsize is not good if you are wanting to sell directly from the site, like Jeff mentioned at Zenfolio.

But anyway, here is the link to Pbase if you want to take a look around and get all the details:
