Thisis the main menu of BioShock. On PC the player can control it with the mouse. The console versions of the menu is a little bit different as one can see. The player can navigate with the controller and when they highlight an option, the sound of a piano can be heard.

The player can only turn this on if they have Windows Vista and a DirectX 10 compatible video card. The game has some differences in DX10 mode: The trail the player leaves behind in water looks more realistic, and the game will soften the shadow maps and creates soft edged particles. Note: It seems that these effect are automatically turned on if one has Vista and a DX10 card.

One can set the game difficulty anytime during the game using this slider. The game recommends "Easy" for those that are new to first-person shooters, "Medium" to those who have played FPSs before, and "Hard" for seasoned veterans. "Survivor" is given the subtitle "every bullet counts" (On Xbox 360 requires Ultimate Rapture Edition to be available).

On Easy and Normal difficulty, the player will not die instantly from a "fatal" injury; instead their health will be reduced to 1, and they'll only die if they take 1 more hit. For example, if they only have 20 health, and take 30 damage, instead of ending up with -10 health (i.e. dead), they will still be alive, with 1 health.

Gives the player helpful tips during the game. After completing a first playthrough it is recommended to turn this option off, as the tips it gives are basic and, in most cases, obvious. Although helpful for the forgetful such as how to use a First Aid Kit.

Puts subtitles in the game whenever a dialog is heard. Some dialogues do not have subtitles, for example, Jack's line at the very beginning of the game. The subtitles may also disappear before the dialogue is finished.

Turn this option if one wants to use their controller. Only XInput-compatible controllers, such as Microsoft Xbox 360 controllers, are supported. If the player turns this on they can control the whole game (including menus) with the controller.

On this page of the BioShock game guide, we explain the differences between the available difficulty levels. Our tutorial also contains a number of tips that should be useful when playing the game on one of the two higher difficulty levels-Hard or Survivor.

Playing on one of the higher difficulty levels (Hard or Survivor) does not change the game's storyline in any way, while opponents are much harder to kill and their attacks are more dangerous. Because of this, you need to show more wits and attention, and the game is much more likely to award stealth actions, in order to avoid unnecessary confrontations or laying traps on enemies.

This is the recommended difficulty level for completing a campaign for the first time. It will offer a fairly high level of difficulty, but at the same time should not cause huge disappointments as a result of too difficult fights with opponents.

Big Daddies - the most difficult opponents to kill, and at the same time the easiest. The difficulty, of course, is in their physical resistance and the large injuries inflicted, in the fact that in their case, we choose the place and time of the fight. They do not attack themselves, so before the battle, it is necessary to prepare weapons with appropriate ammunition (armor-piercing rifle ammo, electric gel, grenades), as well as to prepare the battlefield. Until we have a chemical Blaster with electric gel, we must choose a place with some obstacles (a wide column, a thick tree, etc.), around which we will run and behind which we will hide from daddy. It is necessary to mine the territory between daddy and us, you can also put a gas cylinder or other exploding object in the way. Then shoot the Daddy, and the rushing monster falls into the prepared trap.

From the moment we get the chemical Blaster, the electric gel is enough-daddy has no chance, and he can't do anything with us, even if he is at arm's length from us. if using U-Invent stations you focus on crafting gel, you should have no problems with its stock.

Daddies as bodyguards - the Hypnotize Big Daddy plasmid is extremely useful because there are a lot of daddies, they wander around locations, even when they no longer have Sisters to protect. However, it has two limitations - first, the Daddy will not attack opponents unless we attack them or the other way around. Secondly, we need to watch out for hitting a daddy by accident, who in this case will turn against us. Because of this, most likely, there is no use of explosive ammunition, grenades, and napalm in his presence. The best strategy is to look into the room, shoot at the enemies and hide-the daddy will successfully cope with the rest. For optimizers, if we distract the Daddy from the girl and use it against other opponents, the damage that he will receive during the battle with them will help us get it later, because the Daddy does not heal.

Cameras and turrets-hacking them is important as almost every time you enter a new room in the rest of the already discovered locations new opponents appear. Cameras and turrets will help us eliminate them without wasting time and precious ammunition. On the hard and Survivor difficulty levels, cameras are more important, which are never attacked by opponents, since the turrets quickly turn into a pile of scrap metal. If the camera is too high to reach it, it is worth to use telekinesis to bring some box and put it under the camera-after you jump on it, you will no longer have problems with reaching it.

Effective spending of ADAM-especially when you rescue the girls, the effective management of ADAM is important. In every Gatherer's Garden, you can only buy one health and EVE boost, so if you don't want to go back, this should be your priority. Secondly, invest in additional slots for plasmids and tonics. On the other hand, don't buy tonics and plasmids if you really don't need them - they will be cheaper in the next location!

Crossbow-weapon of choice in later locations. One shot in the head destroys almost any opponent, except for daddy. And how to get a headshot when the enemy is rushing at you shouting wildly? Simply, stop him using Electro Bold (preferably version 3, this is a very reasonable investment), aim steadily and shoot. It works on all opponents but those resistant to electricity. In addition, in the case of a crossbow, the ability to restore ammunition leads to the fact that we have no problems with it.

Photographing is very important - at the Hard and Survivor difficulty levels you will often photograph dead opponents, so it's worth making sure that when shooting corpses, you always have another character in the frame besides this one being photographed (Big Daddy, other corpses, etc.) - then you get a bonus for many objects. The same applies to photographing Sisters (always with a Daddy) and Daddies (always with a little sister).

ramkaniebeskasummary: playing on one of the highest difficulty levels gives great satisfaction. To those really ambitious (maniacs?) we recommend playing without saving the game (except, of course, AutoSave and ending due to at least a little sleep). Good luck!/ramkaniebieska

I am having a hell of a time with the Protector Trials ( I actually for the first time threw my controller to the ground in frustration) and am now regretting the purchase, but since I did and now have the achievements to unlock does anyone know if the difficulty is based on the degree you have the original BS2 game? I am playing the retail on hard and can't help but feel that translates to "impossible" in the Trials. Any ideas or am I just abysmal at this impulse (i.e. regrettable) purchase?

the last save data i had is on hard and i moved through the trials pretty quickly (and i completely suck at multi-player, so im no wiz). it seemed hard at first, but after you get the hang of it, its not so bad. i got through most within 1-2 tries. the trick is to look closely at the weapons and plasmids you are given and use each to its fullest. also watch which direction most of the splicers come from. i found out early on that there is no point to laying traps all over the place because the splicers usually come from 1 general direction. lay traps there and load them up around the little sister. that way you can battle and come back and check on her. if your traps have been sprung, lay more and go back to battle.

-Before you put the Little Sister down, be sure to hack the machines and lay as many traps as you can around the body (trap rivets, proximity mines, mini turrets, etc.) don't bother saving them, you can buy more later.

-You don't need to stand right next to the Little Sister at first, the traps will take care of any splicers that get too close, you can go around and knock off some of the splicers with your plasmids and weapons

I just started the game and decided to start on 1999 mode. Seems like it might be a good challenge. From everything I've been hearing about this Normal is pretty easy so decided to go straight for the top. What difficulty did you start at? Also didn't read up that much on what 1999 did outside of just being harder so... is that really all there is to the mode?

1999 mode is harder but supplies and resources are a lot more limited (hence the trophy/achievement for not buying any supplies at the vending machine while on that difficulty). Enemies are tougher and there's also a semi perma-death in that everytime you die the game deducts 100 coins from your total, If you die and have less than 100 it's resets your game state and you have to start over from the beginning

Normal, just completed it as well actually. Going to start a 1999 mode run later this week and attempt the achievement. Normal started off really easy but I started going down a few times in the later gun fights.
