The Zebra GK420d label printer is the best value in a basic desktop thermal printer and provides direct thermal printing at speeds up to 5 ips at a 203 dpi print density.

The GK420d supports both ZPL and EPL Zebra printer programming languages and a wide variety of interface and feature options. To install and set up your device use the drivers and configuration utility below.
The software downloads below are suitable for USB, Serial, Parallel and Ethernet connection options.

On the MAC OS and some Linux versions it is built-in directly. The following examples are all based on the 1.4.2 version of the CUPS driver which requires installation of the Snow Leopard MAC OS. The CUPS contributors made significant changes to the 1.4.# interface compared to previous 1.3.# versions. Zebra was present in 1.3.# versions and once you get to the Zebra printer setup the options are basically the same.

I've tried a variety of drivers, updating the drivers, different USB ports, updating the .Net on the computers, deleting the printers and reinstalling them etc but nothing seems to be fixing the issue. They print test pages fine so i'm not sure what the issue is.

I strongly recommend using the text based driver. If you are sending ZPL, that's the the cleanest option. If it didn't work before, try a simpler label/ZPL blob; there could be something wrong with the ZPL you are sending.

The only instructions I can find online seem to suggest that you do this by configuring printer connectivity on the existing printer driver. The obvious option for this is 'wired' (out of wired, wireless and bluetooth) and then I've selected DHCP and then I get the final stream page, which shows me a list of settings that will be sent to the printer or saved to a file. Then I select 'Printer' (to send these to the printer), then Finish. Nothing happens - it's as if it did nothing.

It makes more sense to me to install a second print driver, for ethernet, keeping my existing USB one. But when I do this it opens the wizard, and requires a port option, including COMx, FILE, LPTx, PORTPROMPT, SHRFAX, USB001 and some application-based ones (foxit reader, microsoft, etc). yet there is no option that relates to ethernet. So how do I set this up?

Spiceworks seems to have some similar answers to other similar responses where they advise against using a printer through both USB and network. My intention is to set it up via network but have the USB option there as a backup in case of issues, hence the desire for two drivers. What do you think of this?

You can create multiple drivers (actually printer definitions) that point to that network and local USB printer. But lets start to confirm there is a network (ethernet) adapter in that printer. Because they sell them with and without

USB and Ethernet are only ports trough which data is beeing transmited - to your application and driver it does not matter what path you choose. That said, I tend to use ethernet whenever I can, as I had too much problems with USB and Win10. So yes, you can use USB on your and Ethernet on other, you can add two printers in your sortiment and use one port or use two different ports with two printers in your list...

No, don't use generic driver, use Zebra driver for your printer. I'm using second printer with generic driver Generic/Text to send only ZPL language code (native zebra language) from my applications and not to print rendered graphics from other applications...

Back on point, do you have it printing successfully via ethernet today? No, I am interstate atm and want to test this out on my work laptop (just so that if I make a mistake, I won't affect the print driver on the shop laptop). So I'll probably do this on Sunday.

But in those screens, there is no option to select a print driver - I just enter the ip address and it should detect the printer - I presume that is in the next step when it finds the printer - is that correct?

Unfortunately I don't have first hand experience with the web interfaces for these zebra printers. In our case we have external print servers that plug into the parallel port (that way when the printer fails, we don't have to spend the extra bucks for the more expensive printer with a nic card, just personal preference). But looking at the setup docs the instructions are pretty simple so I expect the web interface to be minimal: _Setup.htm Opens a new window

I know you have it but this makes me take pause. Why do you need a different driver for the same computer and printer? You can surely do it, but the printer only speaks ZPL or EPL. The model specific driver should be all you need. But you can totally do this, you can have multiple print queues pointing to the same physical printer port. Each queue can have their own unique driver. I'm only questioning what problem are you trying to solve by doing this?

I have a driver working to print via USB and would like to keep the USB option there in case of issues with the router or cables, etc. It also means that I can take the printer home with me and print to it via USB.

Since the network adapter is built into the zebra, I would probably go through the steps to reset the printer back to factory settings. That should return the network adapter to its default settings and you can try again. -downloads/knowledge-articles/ait/defaulting-the-zpl-desktop-prin... Opens a new window

If the driver listed is not the right version or operating system, search our driver archive for the correct version. Enter Zebra GK420d into the search box above and then submit. In the results, choose the best match for your PC and operating system.

Once you have downloaded your new driver, you'll need to install it. In Windows, use a built-in utility called Device Manager, which allows you to see all of the devices recognized by your system, and the drivers associated with them.

Windows 11: If you have the ZDesigner version 8 driver, and are not seeing the printer on the "Printers and Scanners" page of your computer, open up the Zebra Setup Utilities tool to manage the printer from there.

For MacOS, you will need to install CUPS since Zebra does not officially support MacOS as there are no drivers available. See this article for the steps. Note that this can be very complicated and highly technical. If possible, we recommend keeping things simple and using Windows for Zebra printing. Printing on MacOS will also have lower quality due to there not being any native drivers.

We are use zebra gk240d thermal printer.
Can i control the printer with Arduino?
I want to send data to arduino and arduino connect to printer finally the printer print data
Is this possible?

I haven't come across any reports of anyone ever succeeding this goal with an arduino yet. Doesn't mean it can't be done....but no news of success yet. People have talked about working on software/hardware drivers for it. At the moment, as far as I know...no-one has ever mentioned that they reached the goal.

The second driver is titled "Zebra Setup Utilities" and is found directly below the main driver you selected previously. This ensures the font, format, etc., and finishing touches are installed to complete the whole installation process.

I'm working remotely with a user, so I'm not seeing this myself. I've tried removing and reinstalling the printer driver, moving the USB cable to a different port, same problem every time. I can see the print job hit the job queue, it vanishes from the queue as if the printer had taken it, but the printer doesn't print anything.

We received a reply to our ticket and the solution was to set a custom page size in the Zebra printer driver. Apparently there is a bug between some label printer drivers and Thinprint for this. After setting a custom page size, and setting it to the default in the Zebra driver, Thinprint started working fine.

We've done additional testing, and found that sometimes nothing will print at all from the VM, even though printing directly from the thin client to the printer works every time. Other printers continue to work fine within the VM, it's only affecting this single type of label printer. Tried updated drivers and to me it seems to be a ThinPrint issue or with the TP printer driver. It will spool to the printer in the VM, then quickly disappear and nothing will ever print. Nothing seems to show up in the Windows logs either.
